China has lodged a formal protest with Nigeria’s foreign ministry over Friday’s killing of a Chinese construction worker in the troubled northeastern city of Maiduguri.
China’s news agency, Xinhua, reports that a spokesperson for the country’s foreign ministry, Hong Lei, said it attached “great importance” to the incident.
Lei, who spoke at a press briefing said the Chinese embassy in Nigeria initiated an emergency response mechanism immediately and lodged a representation to the Nigerian government, urging substantial measures to protect Chinese personnel and institutions in Nigeria.
The Chinese was shot dead by a stray bullet at a construction site around Lagos Street in Maiduguri at about 1p.m, while trying to avoid an unidentified gunfight, according to Lei.
The incident came barely three weeks after a Chinese cook working with a construction company and a Nigerian employed by the Chinese firm were killed in Maiduguri. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
