The dreams of eating a nice meal of Pounded yam, Egusi soup and fresh peppered snails as dinner was shattered as a Nigerian traveller to the UK was left disappointed when UK border control confiscated the snails he tried to bring into the country.
A group of 36 giant African land snails was seized from the Nigerian man’s luggage by Border Force officers at Glasgow Airport few days ago.
The passenger flew into Scotland from Amsterdam with the creatures, which were still alive and measure around 15cm-long on average.
But officers swiftly took them away because live animals require an import licence, which the man did not have.
They were passed on to a rescue organisation and the passenger was warned about the restrictions on bringing the creatures into the UK.
The snails, not native to the UK, have shells the size of a small human fist.
While they are unlikely to survive a British winter, they could pass on diseases to the indigenous snail population if released into the wild, DailyMail understands,
Murdo MacMillan, of the Border Force in Scotland, said: ‘The vigilance of our officers at Glasgow Airport has stopped these snails from entering Scotland, and possibly posing a risk to our native plants and wildlife.
‘I would warn travellers not to attempt to bring live animals into the UK without a permit, or to bring in any products of animal origin which may contain pests or diseases.’

oh, its a pity. feel so sorry for the man. but since the snails were still alive, it was a good reason to confiscate them.
ReplyDeletemost people who travel with such things usually kill and dry or fry them first before traveling with them.

ReplyDeleteSeriously, where is d news in dis? Nigerian eye, hit d streets of naija 4 news & stop dis type of lazy reporting, plzzzzzzzzz.
DeleteI was just beginning to wonder as well. Why do we need this story??
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the man ever tried to find out what is allowed into UK before he left Nigeria. If he wanted to breed them in UK he should have gone through the proper channel. How did he get the live snail through the custom? He must have manipulated his way through and in the end he lost his money and the delicacy of snail meat. Sorry oo!
ReplyDeleteNija has too much problem for this to b news. May be Nigerian eye just wanted us to remove our minds from all the regular heart ache and burns we receive from Nigerian news.
