Friendly Relations between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia is set to crumble as local media in Saudi Arabia today reported that 400 female Hajj pilgrims from Nigeria have been detained by Saudi authorities.
The Saudis requested each female pilgrim to provide her muharram – the approved male companion accompanying her on her trip, usually a husband, father or brother and that those that couldn’t produce any, were detained.
The authorities further threatened to deport the pilgrims to Nigeria. The pilgrims arrived Jeddah in two separate Max Air flights Sunday afternoon. One of the planes, conveyed pilgrims from Jigawa State while the second conveyed pilgrims from Sokoto State.
The nearly 400 women were only allowed to be supplied with water and food by the Saudis after strenuous efforts by the Nigerian Consul in Jeddah and a Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.
The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad, who is the Amirul Hajj, has condemned the action of the Saudi authorities, describing it as “an insult to Nigeria and to this country’s millions of Muslims.

They turn around to travel alone because most of their sponsors (husband and parents) where mostly arranged or where not ready to travel.
This is the case because Govet is financing this pilgrim stuff. Every year thousands of Muslims are sponsored to Hajji. Very few christians make use of this opportunity. Many Christians don't even know that federal government sponsors Pilgrimage.
Tis is one of the bullshit and means of wasting our common wealth instituted by military leaders from the North.
I am not against Pilgrimage, but why should Govt sponsor people to the holy ground? This is why we have too many religious fanatics that have no indept know of their religion.
The Islamic Pilgrim board should stand up, investigate this and let's know what lead to this.
FG should stop all forms of sponsorship of Pilgrims. Those that are moved nad sincerely need to go to the holy land should raise their money and do so.

The Sultan said that it was NOT the usual practice to request a Muharam to accompany women to pilgrimage to the holy land, otherwise Nigeria would have complied. The Islamic authorities in Nigeria need to negotiate with Saudi or just accept the demands of Saudi. But this does not breed good relationship b/w them. the saudis perhaps are exhibiting prejudice against Nigerians. Wonder if other countries are being required to provide muharams compulsorily.

ReplyDeleteI don't know where people are getting information from.In the north people pay their money to go for Hajj.From 1999 Nigerian government stopped subsidizing Hajj and we said nothing.It is only in the south that state governments are still paying for people to go for Hajj.I heard it in the news this morning that cross-rivers state government paid for 50 out of the eighty hajj seats allocated for the state.WHY?
