The police in Nigeria’s capital of Abuja have arrested an electronic dealer at Zone 3, shopping complex, for allegedly being in possession of some stolen iPad tablet computer and other items belonging to the National Hospital.
A Police source at the Zone 3 Police Division said the hospital implanted the tracking devices in its gadgets after series of computer thefts since January this year.
According to Mr Mai Lafiya, the Chief Security Officer, the device was called into play after yet another theft.
“Recently, the hospital iPad computer got missing, and it triggered the tracking device. The item was traced to a shop at the Zone 3 shopping complex,’’ he said
A police source confirmed that the suspect was now in police custody and that a search warrant had been issued to search the entire shop for more stolen items.
In another development, an 18 year-old dancer, Fahima Ahmed, of Daki-Biyu village, Abuja, was on Thursday sentenced to six months imprisonment by an Abuja Chief Magistrates’ Court for stealing cell phones.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Rahmatu Gulma, while handing down the sentence, described the convict as an expert in “thievery who is not remorseful of her crime’’.
“She appears to be an expert in thievery to have been able to enter a room where four men are sleeping without any fear and picked up four cell phones and cash. Such a girl does not deserve any mercy. She deserved to be punished to serve as a deterrent to her and others.
Gulma ordered that the four cell phones be retrieved from the convict and given back to the owners.
She also ordered the convict to pay N8,400 as compensation for the stolen cash, or serve one month imprisonment “if she cannot return the money’’.
Police prosecutor Phillip Apollus had told the court that Nuhu Musa, one of the complainants, reported the theft at the Life Camp Police Station on 18 September.
Apollus said that while the complainant and his roommates were asleep, the accused sneaked into their room and stole their phones and N8,400 cash belonging to the complainant on Sept 17.
He said the phones, valued at N4,500 each, were recovered from the convict, but the money was not recovered.
The convict pleaded guilty to the charge and begged for leniency.
“l stole the money in order to treat the wound on my head,’’ she had said. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
