Names of underage children have been found on salary lists in some local government areas of Kogi State, just as it has been discovered that some people in the state collect salaries twice every month, president of the state’s chapter of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) Alex Abutu has said.
Addressing journalists in Lokoja yesterday, he said names of some local government staff, who ought to have retired about five years ago were still on the payroll of some councils.
He said the irregularities were discovered during the ongoing screening exercise by ALGON in collaboration with the union. Abutu said the development was responsible for the inability of some local governments in the state to pay full salaries to their staff in the past three months.
He lamented over the inability of the state government to pay the approved new minimum wage of N18,000, adding that the issue is already creating a tension in local government areas, especially as state workers have been enjoying the minimum wage.
The NULGE president called on members of the union to remain calm, saying efforts are being made to address the situation.
