After the fire outbreak on Thursday evening, hundreds of HIV/AIDS patients turned up on Friday at the Direct Observation Therapy Centre of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital to collect their drugs, Premium Times reported.
It said some of the outpatients expressed shock over the burnt wooden building of the AIDS Prevention Initiative of Nigeria, where they were usually attended to.
One of them, Tony (not his real name), who collects HIV drugs at the APIN centre, said the clinic was useful to a lot of people. He said he came to collect his tuberculosis drugs.
“This place saves the lives of many people. You can see the people who are waiting at the DOT centre. I’m lucky I collected mine (HIV drugs) on Wednesday,” he told Premium Times.
Tony said the APIN centre housed their medical records as they were expected to undergo medical check-ups every three months to monitor the progress in their health among others.
“So, if a particular drug is not working for an individual, he can be given another one. The records are all kept here. We only come with our cards,” he said.
However, some eyewitnesses said the fire destroyed hospital documents, computers, medical equipment and drugs.
There were also concerns over the safety of medical records and the medical histories of the patients.
But the hospital’s spokesperson, Mrs. Hope Nwawolo, said that all the records and drugs were intact.
