Lateef Adegbite Dies At 79




The Secretary General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Dr. Lateef Adegbite, is dead. He died in Lagos last night after a brief illness.


He was 79 years old at the time of death, having been born on March 20, 1933.

Although details of the cause of his death remains sketchy as at the time of going to press, he was said to have been ill for some time.

He was said to have been flown abroad for medical attention in London and Canada at different times before his death in Lagos.

A devout Muslim, he was deeply involved in Islamic activities in the country and worked towards peaceful co-existence between Muslims and Christians.

Ogun State governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun in a statement by his media aide, Mrs. Funmi Wakama, confirmed the death of the foremost Egba High Chief.

Amosun described the late Seriki of Egbaland as one of the icons the state has produced for Nigeria.
“Dr. Adegbite shone like a star in the field of law and was well known across the world as the mouthpiece of Islam in Nigeria, the governor said.

He noted that the late Seriki was a man who usually offered wise counsel to governments at federal and state levels.

The governor added that the demise of Adegbite is not just a loss to Ogun State but to Nigeria as a whole.

While praying that almighty Allah grants his soul Aljanah Fidaus, the governor commiserated with the Adegbite family, people of Egbaland, the Muslim community and Nigerians in general.
The Islamic cleric would be laid to rest today, according to Islamic rites.

The late Adegbite, CON, PhD (London) was a former Attorney-General of the Western State of Nigeria and belonged to several national, international, professional and business organisations.
Until his death, he was the Principal Partner of Lateef Adegblte & Co. A leading law firm, which specialises in Commercial Law Practice.

He had a wealth of knowledge and experience and was a Director of Jaiz International Plc and Industrial And General Insurance Company Limited.
