Gunmen kill JTF intelligence officer in Yobe

Violence continued in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, as tragedy struck the Military Joint Task Force (JTF) when its intelligence personnel, was, Friday afternoon, ambushed at a mechanical workshop and shot dead by gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect.
The killing occurred two hours before Governor Ibrahim Gaidam’s special broadcast on the Boko Haram insurgency and flooding.

Speaking yesterday, on the incident, the Yobe State Police Commissioner, Patrick Egbuniwe, said no arrests had been made. He, however, gave the assurance that “the police are trailing the assailants that ambushed the military intelligence personnel at a mechanic workshop yesterday afternoon.”
He said the suspected gunmen came in unmarked Golf Volkswagen vehicle and waited for several minutes while the personnel was checking his car being repaired on Potiskum Road, before firing severally shots into his chest and head.
The Military officer reportedly slumped and died. The Police Commissioner said the area has been cordoned off by the JTF to prevent further attacks and killings.
An eyewitness also told The Guardian on telephone that “the suspects had monitored the movements of the military intelligence officer, as he used to repair his vehicle at the workshop here in Damaturu.
The gunmen knew him very well, before they ambushed and killed him in cold blood,” adding that after killing him, the assailants sped off towards Potiskum Road.
It was gathered that the incident drew the ire of the JTF troops, as they started shooting sporadically into the air.
“Many people who were just retiring home started running and everybody was confused thinking it was a bloody attack or confrontation between men of the JTF and the Boko Haram sect,” said a resident caught in the web of the confusion.
