Confusion as Police Corporal kills ‘Tricycle operator’ Chairman in Lagos


Trouble broke out Thursday night in Mieran area of Lagos after a Police Corporal allegedly shot dead chairman of Tricycle operators. The reason for the dastardly act could not be immediately ascertained but an aye witness account said the deceased identified as Dele Oroja was riding on his tricycle otherwise known as ‘Keke Marwa’ when he was stopped by the Corporal also identified as Abbey Adekunle and his team.

They reportedly demanded for  an unspecified amount of money at a road block mounted in defiance of the Inspector-General of Police IGP MD Abubakar’s order. The deceased was reported to have refused to yield to the corporal’s overtures following which an arguement ensued.

According to the eye witness, the Corporal promptly grabbed his rifle and fired at the deceased who reportedly died on the way to the hospital. The news of the shooting soon filtered into town prompting a rowdy situation as other members of tricycle operators surged towards Mieran police station with a view to razing it down. The killer cop was said to have been arrested and detained.
Lagos state command Police Public Relations Officer DSP Ngozi Braide who confirmed the incident described the circumstance surrounding the shooting as mysterious adding, “At about 10.20pm Thursday, one corporal Abbey Adekunle attached to Meiran Division while on duty and clearing of obstruction in front of the Police Station allegedly shot one Dele Oroja a tri-cyclist, in a mysterious circumstance”.
Continuing she said, “ the victim was immediately rushed to Araba Medical center, Meiran, but unfortunately died over the night. The corpse, has been deposited at the General Hospital Ikeja for autopsy while the suspect is under arrest and currently being detained at the State CID Panti, Yaba.
“The Commissioner of Police Lagos State Command wishes to use the medium to appeal to members of Meiran Community and Lagosians to embrace peace and remain calm as Police have commenced investigation and that justice will definitely be done in this matter, please.”
In another development, two dare devil armed robbers were yesterday gunned down along Creek road Apapa, Lagos by policemen attached to Apapa Division in a shoot-out with the police. Sources said the bandits had laid ambush against an unidentified middle-aged woman who came out of one of the second generation banks holding a big brown envelope.
Thinking that woman was holding money, the robbers moved towards her and attempted to grab it but she reportedly resisted and she was fired at. The shooting, it was gathered attracted some policemen led by the DPO, CSP Usman Ndabanbo who responded immediately.
During a shoot-out that ensued, two of them were gunned while others escaped with bullet wounds. One died on the spot while the other died on the way to the hospital. The new Area Commander Mohammed Ali confirmed the incident adding that the success was achieved through public cooperation.
Meanwhile, tricycle operators yesterday protested the  killing of  their colleague by a policeman.
Pandemonium broke out in M eiran area of Lagos, following a protest by tricycle operators, over the death of one of their members by a policeman Thursday night.
The deceased, one Dele Orojo was allegedly shot by  Corporal Abbey Adekunle, with reason of his action yet unknown.
The visibly angry Commissiner of Police, Mr Umar Manko as gathered , ordered for the immediate arrest of the Corporal and subsequent interrogation at the end of which sources at the Command headquarters Ikeja hinted that he would be dismissed fro m the Force if found culpable of the act and prosecuted.
Confirming the incident, Braide said, “ On September 6, 2012 at about 2020hrs, one corporal Abbey Adekunle attached to Meiran Division while on duty and clearing of obstruction in front of the Police Station allegedly shot one Dele Oroja ‘m’, a tr i-cyclist, in a mysterious circumstance.
The victim was immediately rushed to Araba Medical center, Meiran, but unfortunately died over the night.
The corpse has been deposited at the General Hospital Ikeja for post mortem examination, while the suspect is under arrest and currently being detained at the State CID Panti, Yaba.
The Commissioner of Police , Mr Umar Manko ,  wishes to use this medium to appeal to members of Meiran Community and Lagosians to embrace peace and remain calm as Police has commenced investigation and justice will definitely be done in this matter, please”.
