Cameroon dam water destroys 49 communities in Cross River State

Over 49 coastal communities in seven local governments in Cross River State have been destroyed in the last one week by water from the Lagdo Dam, Cameroon.

A similar discharge of water from the dam destroyed communities in Adamawa State in August.

Hundreds of houses were also swept away by floods in Yala, Ogoja, Ikom, Obubra, Abi, Biase and Odukpani in Cross River.

Our correspondent learnt on Sunday that no fewer than 100 houses were destroyed and 2,500 livestock killed.

One of the affected victims, Obanji Oko, said, "The water is rising every minute, we have never seen this kind of devastation before and we can no longer sleep because we are afraid that the raging water could sweep us away while at sleep. As you can see several houses have collapsed. It is pathetic".

Director-General of the state Emergency Management Agency, Mr. Vincent Aquah, who assessed the level of damage on Sunday, feared that the severity of the damage to lives and property could increase as the level of flood rises.

Aquah said apart from extreme famine that would visit the agrarian communities as a result of the destruction of their farms, many had been rendered homeless.

He said, "As you can see, these conditions are far below human standard, particularly living in a slum such as these these tached houses. Children and women are suffering and there is an urgent need to address the situation before it gets out of hand."

The DG appealed to the Federal Government and international organisations to come to the aid of the affected communities, saying the state government lacked the financial capacity to effectively manage the situation.

He said a sensitisation campaign had already begun in all the communities affected by floods, adding that the relocation of vulnerable villages to higher grounds was the only option.

The SEMA boss assured that efforts would be made by the state government to cushion the effects of the disaster.

Over 11 persons had been reported killed and hundreds of houses swept away by floods in the state this year.
