No fewer than six primary school teachers, including a headmaster, in Ikeduru and Mbaitoli local government areas of Imo State are now being questioned for alleged fleecing of pupils and payment of ghost workers.
The Executive Chairman of Imo State Universal Basic Education Board, IMSUBEB, Mrs. Uche Ejiogu, who disclosed this while fielding questions at Correspondents’ Forum in Owerri, also said the headmaster, whose child left the school system several years ago, was still paying his salary until he was caught in the act.
Ejiogu said the headmaster had not only faced a panel but had equally agreed to pay all the monies he paid his son illegally, adding that the other teachers, who decided to flout the directives of the state governor on non-payment of fees by pupils will be sanctioned.
She said: “These teachers were busy collecting various sums of money from their pupils for handiwork.
“This runs counter to government directives and the monies collected were never accounted for by the teachers.”
On teachers’ welfare, Ejiogu said her administration was aware of the global essence of Information Communication Technology and the impact of digital technology and has decided to organise free computer programmes for all teachers in the state in partnership with a firm.
“This is because in the present millennium, all learning has gone digital and comuter education is an imperative for the Imo State Universal Basic Education Board”, Ejiogu said. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
