The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr. Bamanga Tukur, has said the party will start its reconciliation process with former President Olusegun Obasanjo and others.
He said the reconciliation process, which he agreed needed to be carried out in order to heal old wounds among party members, would start after the Ramadan period.
Tukur, who spoke with journalists in Abuja on Saturday, said the party would also embark on national reconciliation tour of the six geopolitical zones of the country.
He said the aim of the reconciliation was to drive his programme of reconciling all aggrieved members of the party in the country.
The National Executive Committee of the PDP had adopted the reconciliation move at its last meeting in Abuja.
Tukur said those to be appointed as members of the reconciliation tour would be drawn from its Board of Trustees, the National Working Committee and the High Powered Advisory Committee.
He also said each zone would have nine members comprising three from BOT, one from NWC and three from HPAC and two others, whom he said would be selected based on merit.
Tukur said, “The PDP umbrella is large enough to accommodate every Nigerian and it is my intention as promised during the national chairmanship election last March that I will upon election, ensure that the party returns to its cohesive posture in line with the wishes of its founding fathers.
“By the time we finish with the reconciliation, top party men such as former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Ogun State Governor, Gbenga Daniel; and former BOT chairman, Anthony Anenih; will be dining on one huge political table”.
It would be recalled that the party has been factionalised in some states.
For example, in Ogun State, the party is factionalised between Obasanjo, Daniel and another group.
In Edo State, the intra-party crisis was believed to have led to the loss the party suffered during the last governorship election.
The loss has made some members of the party to demand for the resignation of the chairman of the party in the state, Chief Dan Orbih.
“That was why we lost election in the entire South-West geopolitical zone where the party lost election in Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo and Ekiti States.
“We also lost in two states in the South-East – Anambra and Imo to All Progressive Grand Alliance,” Tukur added.
During the tour, Tukur said the party would be guided by the Ekwueme Reconciliation Committee Report.
The report recommended that the way out for the party was to reconcile all the members who had left it for one reason or the other over the years.
