Nigeria’s hope of getting a medal at the Games further diminished on Wednesday after wrestler Blessing Oborodudu lost 3-0 to Poland’s Monika Michalik in the women’s 63kg freestyle.
Oborodudu had qualified for the Olympics through the African and Oceania Wrestling qualifiers in Morocco where she impressed the technical crew led by Daniel Igali
Her weight class had 20 competitors. In her pool were wrestlers from Russia, China, People’s Republic of Korea, Turkey, Cuba, Kazakstan, Ukraine and Guinea Bissau.
Nigeria’s next event in wrestling comes up today as Amarachi Obiajunwa competes against Jiao Wang of China in the 72kg freestyle.
Obiajunwa also qualified from the contest in Morocco and is tipped to finish the Games with a medal.
The two men in the wrestling team – Dick Adibo and Sinivie Boltic – will compete in the 84kg and 96kg categories respectively on Saturday and Sunday.
Nigeria also crashed out in the men’s 110m hurdles on Wednesday following Selim Nurudeen’s fifth-place finish in heat two.
