The Lagos State Government on Friday ordered members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers to quit parks across the state immediately.
It also ordered them to operate from their registered offices and cease to hinder operators of commercial transport in the state.
The state government also banned the collection of tolls on roads and highways by touts.
These new rules were rolled out at a joint press conference in Lagos addressed by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Adey Ipaye; the Commissioner for Transport, Kayode Opeifa; and the Commissioner for Information, Aderemi Ibirogba.
Opeifa told journalists that the ban was in accordance with the provisions of the new road traffic law.
“Henceforth, union activities are no longer allowed in all the garages in the state; what they need to do now is to operate the way other unions in the state operate.
“They are meant to be in their offices; we recognise the right for them to associate but we believe that the motor parks should be made conducive to those who want to carry out their business of commuting in the state.
“No union member should be seen collecting money from transporters; it is illegal and we won’t take this any longer,” he said.
Opeifa said the government would re-register motor parks in the state while unauthorised vehicles and illegal parks would not be allowed in the state’s transport system. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

ReplyDeleteHonestly a step in the right direction. This so called NURTW is of no single benefit to the society. They simply force themselve on us. Goverment should set up a department meant for collection of a moderate fee and for sure giving the caliber of people at the helm of affairs in Lagos state; it will be used judiciously for the betterment of all. Other states should emulate this giant stride as laziness should be flushed out from our society. God bless Nigeria.
ReplyDeleteLagosians prepare for more armed robbery attacks as this new law takes effect.

ReplyDeleteWhy all the I pray it works!!! This is the problem with nigerians, we are so used to the wrong way of living, that we can't see a good initiative. Sincerely of what use are the touts? They still rob people in lagos regardless of them being banned or not. Pls let the useless and jobless hemp smokers go and find gainful employment. At least the lagos state government is begining a sort of social reengineering and this is really what our society needs. Not useless and selfish lawmakers like Facrook.
