Jonathan seeks 'honest feedback' from Nigerians on power supply

President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday sought “honest feedback” from Nigerians on claims by the Ministry of Power that the nation’s energy situation had improved significantly.

Last week, the Minister of Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji, had told Nigerians that
generation rose to 4237MW at 9p.m on August 6.But, in a move to get a direct feel of the impact of the improved supply on the people, Jonathan through his media team on Wednesday asked Nigerians to choose from three options in a survey.

In a post on Twitter by his Special Assistant on New Media, Mr. Reno Omokri, wrote, “Has the power situation in your area A. Improved B.Remained the same or C. Deteriorated. Please give honest feedback.”

Nigerians are expected to give the feedback by Twitter (@renoomokri) or Facebook.

The Federal Government had on Sunday raised hopes of improvement in power supply by announcing plans to raise electricity output from 4,300 megawatts to 9,000mw in a few months.
The declaration was contained in an advertorial placed in some newspapers by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs.

The advertorial outlined Jonathan’s achievements in the last one year as well as his determination to reach the new target upon completion of the 10 projects under the National Integrated Power Plants.
The projects are Ihovbor in Edo State (451mw); Omotosho in Ondo State (451mw); Olorunsogo in Ogun State (750mw); Sapele in Delta State (451mw); Geregu in Kogi State (434mw); Egbema in Imo State (338mw); Gbarain in Bayelsa State (225mw); Omoku in Rivers State (225mw); Calabar in Cross River State (561mw); and Alaoji in Abia State (1074mw).

“This administration met 10 abandoned NIPP projects and has successfully revitalised all. More importantly, they are all within the range of 95-100 per cent completion stage and are awaiting gas supply, which government has taken very concrete steps to address.
“Government has improved power generation from under 3,000mw in 2011 to 4,300mw by August 2012.

“Therefore, when the 10 NIPP projects are fully on stream, which will be within the next few months, the total national generation capacity will not be less than 9000mw, a 200 per cent increase in generating capacity as compared with the figures for 2011 and the highest ever by any administration since independence,” the Presidency said in the statement signed by the Media Director in the office, Mr. Olusanya Awosan.

  1. Nice one Mr President..Your administration have failed woefully becos u've always put the cart before the horse..We are talking about the present state of insecurity in the country u talking about seeking honest feedvbacks from nigerians concerning power supply..Our president is insane..People are dying everyday..There's war in the North..Our women and children are bn abused..This man's nt even addressing the level of poverty in the country..Thousands are graduating every year without jobs..So many vices in the country that GEJ would have created a platform to discuss and talk about instead he chose to ask 'honest nigerians for feedbacks on the situation of power supply'..Our president has gone mad!

  2. This is not supposed to call for an insult please. Epileptic power supply has always been a major problem in this country which I think if well addressed, will set the nation on a right footing to greatness. Agreed we've got other challenges & difficulties as a nation, but I think this particular development should be applauded. Let's just pray for its complete success. Kayjoe

    1. To be honest I think you are the fool, what use is light for the dead, or people who are burying the dead, has he said anything that Is not true, while I agree that power is important and would create jobs, that in itself is not the only solution, are the banks lending money for us to start business, in the uk the government has set aside £30 billion for small business so much so that even banks are begging people to open up business account and if ran well would get loans of up to £20 thousand pounds in just 6 months, as our government done so, has it addressed the issue of multiple tax that is killing small biz, or security and idiots like you think just power generation on its our will work wonders rubbish, try building a house without foundation

  5. That we need to tackle insecurity does not mean we should abandon everything else. Let us not be carried away by emotions and lose objectivity. If power supply has improved, it is a welcome development. Though I dont know what purpose the survey will serve. 4.23MW is still far below what we need. - AJ

  7. Nigeria has multiple problems and they have t solved gradually. So, Dele if Mr President has solved the power problem we give him thumps up for and urge him to do more instead of playing down on his achievements. Power is crucial issue in any nation. It is kernel of development and therefore it is not out of place to address the issue now.

Based on where I am living in Portharcourt precisely Ellioparanwo/Mgbuakara, there is no improvement on power at all. We are even deteriorating. I was at Awka the capital of Anambra state, there was no to impress me about the electricity condition in the state capital. I discovered that most people that acknowledged improvement in power are all living in Lagos and Abuja. But you cannot define Nigeria with what is happening in these cities alone even though they are important in the economy of the nation. Other places should also be taken into consideration.

  8. this write up is just full of mix feelings, everyone knows the situation of the country, the article did not ask to comment on the security situation of the country, just simple instruction feedback on the power generation, transmission, and supply simple...Dele started shouting aloud for what..if you know you know much pls go to your council and seek for electoral position then we can see how good you are....story tellers are numerous in this country, we see much of you parading yourself on the screens of the tvs toothless bulldogs.
Anyway to be honest with you, i can give a thump up for the PHCN, electricity has improved tremendously in my area...

I think we should all understand that the insecurity condition we found ourselves today in Nigeria is a deliberate act of some foolish politicians that are bent on tarnishing the image of this administration. And i believe that every well reasoning Nigeria should know that the president is not being coward, but cautious cos d unity of this country is seriously in doubt.Well that's by-d-way coming back to the main issue i think the power supply has increased tremendously in surulere my side....well done sir

  16. I am glad that Nigerian will have the opportunity to have the least power interuption since independent. This will be great achievement and we should commend our Government for trying just as we criticize them for other things they failed to do. The other problem that must be address is continuity of good governance.Jobs will come as a result. Businesses can expand and stay open longer. I am just so happy for Nigeria.
