Buhari laments effects of violence on North’s economy

Former Head of State, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, has lamented the harm done by the Boko Haram insurgency in the North to commercial activities in the region.

Buhari, who on Monday blamed Nigerian leaders for growing insecurity in the country, regretted that traders from neighbouring countries, who thronged the North for various goods, no longer show up because of the spate of violence in the area.

The Congress for Progressive Change candidate for the 2011 presidential election spoke when he visited Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Wednesday.

He said, “It is on record that over 200 articulated truck vehicles left Kano every day for Maiduguri and in Maiduguri, traders from Cameroon, Chad, Niger Republic would be waiting to receive their goods from Kano.
“Now, that situation has virtually gone because of the security threat in Kano and other northern states.

“How many Nigerians; because of this dastardly act are now forced and pushed into poverty, since it was no longer business as usual in Kano.”

He sympathised with the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, and the state government over the coordinated bombings and gun attacks in Kano on January 20. Over 180 persons were reportedly killed in the attacks by suspected Boko Haram members.

Buhari said, “I am here to commiserate with them over the bombing incidence that rocked the state, and for the extra security being provided. It is sad and I hope we would get over it as soon as possible.

“I am also here to open the CPC’s new office in the after several legal battles fought by the CPC.”
Kwankwaso said the leaders of the country should come together to find a lasting solution to the security challenges facing the nation.
While commending Buhari for visiting him, in spite of their party differences, the governor advised other politicians to emulate Buhari’s kind of politics.

  1. The General. All others are mere impostures. May you live long and see the fruits of your wisdom. While alot of political sycophants will shiver at the very thought that you may become the president of Nigeria, a lot more will dance azonto just for the announcement that you may be contesting. Surely the evil ways are not forever and i believe the sun will shine before the end is reached; for the most enigmatic president that has ever ruled the Nigerian state can never be reduced to ruins. We await your coming with utmost interest. Let the perpetrators of heneous crimes begin to wonder if all heaven and earth can hide them and thier looted tresure. Surely only the guilty will protest the coming into power of a tested and trusted leader. So it begins...and so it shall come to pass...we can only but wait to see how it unfolds.

  7. Funsho, even if you are the campaign manager of Buhari, you think Nigerians are blind? Ignorance or foolishness, who are you kidding? The North ain't see anything yet. They never realised they were harming their selves, since they are the only race in Nigeria. How many questions can you answer? After who's departure from Abuja did the last election violence start?

  8. Thank u my brother (last commentator before mine) The north has been hurt people from other part and other creed, In the north not even indigenous christian are free from systematic hurt or sudden ethno religious violence. At the slightest or no provocation they pounce on Christians killing them and raping their ladies and looting and burning their property. In many federal high intitution and prisons in Northern states no churches but only mosques this is a clear indication that even in a federal system this region is desperate to alienate others. This was the kind of philosophy that lead to massive destruction of live and property after President Jonathan's Victory in last polls further more this trend was crested by full blown massacre by Boko Haram a political tool of norther politicians which has been on ground and begin to launch its violence agenda since late Yar adua's tenure. It was carefully calculated and packaged for the time when Christian succeed the Late president which came earlier of so by his sudden death. Some theories had it that North is already jittery of Yara'adua's health and appalled by possibles succession by Jonathan. Nemesis will catch up with all of these blood spillers!
