The Abuja Environmental Protection Board said on Friday the monthly Environmental Sanitation had been scrapped due to the nonchalant attitude of the residents.
The AEPB Head, Information and Outreach Programme, Mr. Joe Ukairo, announced this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja.
Ukairo said the board had observed that residents waited in the comfort of their homes till 10a.m, to go about their normal businesses on sanitation days, rather than participate in the exercise.
“With the full support of the Honourable Minister of FCT, Sen. Bala Mohammed, the monthly exercise has been replaced with the daily house to house inspection,” he said.
Ukairo advised residents to clean their houses and surroundings on a daily basis, instead of waiting for the monthly exercise.
He said the Department of Environmental Health and Safety of the Board would carry out house to house inspection in the city on a daily basis.
He said, “Everyday, the environmental health and safety team goes on house to house inspection.”
He stated that the inspection was more effective than the monthly exercise.
Meanwhile, some residents of the FCT and area councils have decried the scrapping of the monthly exercise, saying that the city was neater when it was on.
Mr. John Ochigbo, a resident of Kuje, said the EHS team “concentrates its activities more in the centre of Abuja to the neglect of the area councils.”
He said AEPB should consider other environmental sanitation options and find better ways of managing waste.
“Scrapping the exercise is not the best. They should look for a better way to clean the city.
“I don’t like the idea of the board going to people’s houses for inspection, especially with the level of insecurity in the country,” Ochigbo said.
Mrs. Grace Ibikunle, a resident of Kubwa, said she was not in support of the house to house inspection, and called on the board to create more awareness on the need for residents to keep their environment clean.
NAN recalls that the board introduced the house-to-house cleaning exercise in February. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
