ENATE President, Senator David Mark, Thursday, called for a check on the menace of the social media on the Nigerian society, saying that people now use them to demean their leaders.
Mark said the need to check the social media became necessary, as they do not have the avenue for retraction of whatever they had done.
Senator Mark, who spoke in Umuahia, Abia State, while declaring open a two-day retreat for Senate Press corps, explained that the media has come to stay, as part of the process of governance in the country, since the return of democratic government in 1999 and performing its social responsibility of checking the excesses of the leaders.
Senator Mark, however, urged reporters to always cross check their facts before writing so as not to mislead the people, who depend on them to know what goes on around them.
The Senate President cited as examples varied figures usually quoted by various media in times of tragedies, saying that the figures were always inconsistent.
Describing the media as one of the stabilizing factors in the scheme of things, Mark cautioned that “we need to change our attitude on how we report things about our country, and we should emulate the foreign reporters, who never report negative things about their countries.”

Mark is a total idiot. How about that to start with? If you don't want the citizens to lash out at you so-called 'leaders', do your jobs for once instead of stealing money... And this guy's statement further shows there are creatures who have no business in leadership, because while the whole world is getting more open with information sharing, this neanderthal wants to take us back into repression... When does your term end, mister? Pls go home.
ReplyDeleteThis man is talking trash. this is same man that said telephone was not for the poor when he was the minister of information.
ReplyDeleteHe's yet to wake up from sleep???
ReplyDeleteThe mindset of the likes of Senator David Mark shows their contempt for the basic principles of democracy. He is yet to accept the fact that leadership in reality is about stewardship, where leaders(in the case of Nigeria, rulers) are expected to be accountable at all times to the people who put them in the postion of power in the first place. The function of the media is to ensure this. Obviously Senator David Mark's attitude reflects how backward he is.
ReplyDelete....Mark, i know your game.....you cant be President in 2015,
ReplyDeleteUNTILL ALL THESE POLITICIANS,BOTH MILITARY AND CIVILIANS WHO COMMITTED ATROCITIES DURING NIGERIA CIVIL WAR ARE OUT OF THE SYSTEM,NIGERIA WILL KEEP GOING BACKWARD.
ReplyDeleteWhat a pity? Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for that matter! Is he truly representing the people?
ReplyDeleteAll said, i try reading and re-reading the publication to correlate what Nigerianeye said David Mark said and the actual message which start from : "Senator Mark, who spoke in Umuahia, Abia State....."
ReplyDeleteFolks!, please read again. I do not see anything wrong in what Mark said. There was nothing in there to say he mentioned curbing social media etc. The only thing that spoke about checking the menace of Social Media was the caption and the Intro that Nigerianeye gave us and throughout the report they said nothing to substantiate the claims.
