Floods hit the City of Ibadan

A downpour, which started on Saturday and lasted till the early hours of Sunday, ended up flooding some areas of Ibadan.
The affected neighbourhoods include Odo-ona Elewe, Odo-ona Apata, Oke Ayo Apata, Oluyole Estate, Ring Road, Mokola and Apete, where a bridge collapsed.

Observer said that many of the residents of the areas were stranded in their houses.

However, Mr Tokunbo Taiwo, a businessman, who managed to sneak out of his residence in Odo-ona Elewe area said: “The rain started at about 8 p.m. yesterday but we did not take it serious.’’
He, however, said that around 11 p.m., he heard a loud sound and when he came out of the house, he observed that the fence had collapsed, destroying some cars parked in the compound.
“Those living at the ground floor had to run up to my flat and they were with me until this morning. By my estimation, the height of the water in our area would be about 5 feet,” he said.
Mr Kasim Oladepo, a driver, recalled that there was a similar flood in the Odo-Ona Elewe neighbourhood the last year.
He pointed at a house in the area that was almost submerged in the floodwater, saying that the house was seriously affected by the flood of last year.
“I wonder why people are still living in the house in spite of their dreadful experience last year,’’ he added.
Also some worship centres, including the Apostolic Church (Saving Grace), Ahmadiyya Movement-in-Islam, both in Odo-Ona Apata, were seriously affected by the flood.
However, as at the time of going to press, no death has been recorded.
