Farmer bags life imprisonment for stealing a Nokia Phone

A 27 year old peasant farmer, Gambo Simeon on Monday convicted and jailed to life imprisonment by a Maiduguri high court 10 for robbing one Moses Jande of his Nokia handset and the sum of N17, 000. 

The court was told that the convicted man with one Musa Aminu who is at large, in April, 2009, armed themselves with a cutlass and stick attacked their victim on his way from work at Wamdeo town in Askira Uba local government area of Borno.


Simeon, the victim who worked as a bar man in a hotel told the court that he was rob of his Nokia handset valued at N4500 and the sum of N17, 000 by the duo.

The court was also told that the handset which was tendered as exhibit was recovered from Simeon after his arrest by the police.  

Also the wife of the victim earlier told the court that on the date of the incident the two men came to their house asking for the where about of her husband and also threaten to kill her unless she give them some money.

Simeon was charged for robbery under section 298(b) of the penal code law of Borno state.

When the accused farmer was first arraigned in court he pleaded not guilty to the charge but in a statement he allegedly made to the police which was tendered at the court he confessed to the crime.

The presiding judge at the Maiduguri High Court 10, Justice Pindar Haruna Ngadda who convicted the accused said ‘’ I agree with the prosecution that the most important thing in this case is the proved of theft of things stolen and not really the valued of the property and the prosecution has proved this by the exhibit’’

She held that the prosecution has established its case beyond reasonable doubt against Simeon and sentenced him to life imprisonment in accordance with section 298(b) of the penal code laws of Borno State.

  2. If Ali-Modu Sheriff is convicted of all the atrocities he has committed, i wonder what his own sentence will be. Perhaps life and hereafter imprisonment.

  3. This is stupid and unfair!! Life imprisonment for stealing a cellphone!! Really Nigeria... really? I agree with the first commentator, so, what about the Lawans and Otedolas and Babangidas, why do they not have life imprisonment if indeed the point is the crime and not the amount stolen?

  4. We are talking of armed robbery here. The value of what they stole has no role in the gravity of the sentence. The judge was lenient otherwise, it would have been a death sentence. Let him be thanking God in prison. I congratulate him. - Aj
