Dare Oladujoye was held for being in possession of 19 Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) ATM cards and N652,000.
Lagos Commissioner of Police Umar Manko said the suspect withdrew the money from an ATM machine.
He was using the cards to withdraw money from an ATM machine at Ogba branch of the GTB when a security guard raised the alarm.
The suspect denied stealing the cards.
He said he is a money lender who usually collects people’s ATM cards as collateral
The Commissioner of Police for the state police command, Mr. Umar Manko, said as of the time of his arrest, the suspect had withdrawn N652, 000 from the ATM.
Manko said, “On July 26, 2012, around 8:30pm, there was a distress call that there was commotion at GTB, Ogba branch. On getting there, the suspect was seen with 19 ATM cards.
“He is an employee of Zenith Bank and we wondered what he was doing with the 19 cards. He was arrested and as of the time of his arrest, he had cashed N652, 000. The matter is under investigation.”
The suspect however denied stealing the ATM cards. He said whenever he lent people money, he would collect their ATM cards as collateral and return them after payment.
He said, “I usually loan people money and I’ve been doing it for over a year. Whenever I loan people money, I will collect their ATM cards and their Personal Identification Numbers. When they repay me, I return their cards to them.
“However, if they don’t pay me back in cash, I go to withdraw money from their accounts through the ATM.”
When quizzed on where he got the money which he lent people, he said he was into various kinds of businesses.
He also said he had friends in the banking sector who helped him with funds.
He said, “I am a very hard working person. I joined Zenith Bank as a driver over three years ago and in less than a year, I bought a tricycle which I leased to another driver that gives me returns on a regular basis.
“The following year, I bought two tricycles bringing the total number to three. I make N150,000 monthly from the tricycles and N60,000 from my salary. I also get credit facilities through my connections in the banking sector.
“On the day I was arrested, I went to withdraw money on Thursday night with some of the cards when a security guard raised the alarm. I did not steal those cards. I know the owners of the cards and I have their numbers on my phone.”

wHY NOT LET HIM PRODUCE THE NUMBERS OF THE ONWERS OF THE CARD AS HE CLAIMED.
ReplyDeleteMeaning he must have other banks ATM cards in his house because all his customers or victims as the case may be could not possibly be GTB customers alone. This is the first time even given my nine years banking experience that I will hear that ATM card can serve as a collateral for loan repayment!
ReplyDeleteshame on gtbank, for not giving loans to their contract staffs and security guards.
ReplyDeleteThe guy remains innocent until found guilty. Ppl even use their kids as collateral and it is not strange. All that is required now is investigation. I dont even expect the issue to be in this blog now cos it is a no issue for now. Let Police go to GT Bank and get the ID of the owners of the cards and let them testify.
ReplyDeletehhhhmmm, guaranty trust bank, the best bank in nigeria indeed.its a shame its not reflecting in the contract staffs of gtbank.the management is selfish.no loan no good salary, why wont they borrow?shame on gtbank management.
ReplyDeletehmmm good lender.
ReplyDeleteVerify the claim of this man....
ReplyDeleteIt is a great shame for a bank as Gtbank not to treat their contract staff well that led them to go borrowing and using their ATM cards as collateral...Why wont they borrow...infact they should verify the case and let the young man to go unharmed..
ReplyDeleteI do not understand why some people are blaming GTB. The driver works with Zenith that pays him N60,000.00 per month, while the minimun wage is N18,000.00. He has syndicates in GTB and may be in other banks. He did not say that his Partners in crime are Contract Staff, neither did he say that he was refused loan in Zenith. I wonder why anybody in his right frame of mind,is owing someone and has money in his account, instead of paying the person by himself, he allows this person to use his ATM card and withraws from his own account. In this 21st century. I just wonder.
ReplyDeleteWat has gtbank got to do with this story other than their atm cards. The chap never mentioned gtbank contract staff. He got those cards from his customers who are gtbank's customers. And for d suspect, he has done nothing wrong except in d sight of his employer who can accuse him of banking inside banking provided his claim is verified.
ReplyDeleteThis guy is a driver and virtually all the cards are drivers and other contract staff of GT Bank. Like the last person said, the guy already know the penalty of banking inside a bank. The people who used their ATM as pledges need to be advised as this is a clear indication that they are not aware of the inherent risk. Who says, they might not toy with genuine customers' instrument. These guys are daft.
ReplyDeleteDis is my judgement: he is hereby discharged & acquited cos he's better than farouk lawan. I rise
ReplyDeleteI think most of the commenter here are just angry for nothing!
ReplyDelete1. The guy did not say he banks with GTB, it is customers who does.
2. He never say his customers are GTB contract Staff, rather GTB ATM Card holder.
3. A driver who collects 60k per month has no justification whatsoever to still nor dupe people. Collecting ATM card from innocent or unknowledgeable card holder with their pin is a big fraud as he can withdraw any amount he like and no person in his right sense with release his entire account to somebody. Beside, if someone has money in his account that the guy will withdraw, why would that person borrow money? He is lying!!! Just that we might not hear about this case again, once pepper exchange hands. Nigeria Police, Na wa.
The pollice should investigate deeply there are Than jus an ATM card case ( i smell a BIG frode) the stiry is no Were near a true story
