Army investigates Colonel’s violation Of BRT lane

Fasola being Saluted by one of the Army officers
The Nigerian Army on Wednesday commenced investigations into the arrest of Colonel K.I Yusuf and and Staff Sergent Adeomi A.J by Governor Babatunde Fashola for violating the Bus Rapid Transit lane.

A statement by Lieutenant Colonel KO OGUNSANYA, Army Assistant Director of Information said that soldiers are expected to conform with laws of the land, adding that the two officers would face an investigative panel and be dealt with accordingly.

The governor had on Tuesday arrested the two military officers for driving on a dedicated BRT lane. Fashola who was visibly angry left his convoy headed towards the officers and expressed dismay.

The Army statement further reads; The attention of this Headquarters has been drawn to some newspapers front page cover namely, Punch, Sun and the Nation Newspapers of today which were captioned, “Fashola arrests Colonel. Sergeant on BRT lane”. The newspapers alleged that Lagos State Governor, His Excellency Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) on Tuesday 17 July 2012 reprimanded two military officers namely Colonel KI Yusuf and Staff Sergeant AA Adeomi for driving on the dedicated Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane.

“It is true that these personnel made use of the dedicated BRT lane thereby contravening the BRT laws. Lagos State Government forbids non – BRT buses from plying these dedicated lanes which are exclusive rights of way for BRT buses.

“Please be informed that a soldier is guided by the laws of the state he is domiciled in. Military personnel in Lagos not on operational duties ought to comply with the BRT edict. However, the General Officer Commanding 81 Division Nigerian Army, Major General KTJ Minimah has directed that the incident be investigated and the personnel involved would be sanctioned accordingly.

“In view of the above, you are please requested to publish this rejoinder and also give it the required attention it deserves”.

  1. This statement is trash. Which " operational duties" is this man referring to? This is an attempt to createa loophole for soldiers to hide under. There are no military operations in Lagos please. Offocers going for emmergency meetings are not any more important than Commissioners and the State Governor who use normal lanes. Triuth is, when the governor of Lagos State refused to blare sirens to clear the way for himself, self respecting soldiers ought to follow suit. What is important in going to pick "oga" and children from the airport. Because they got aware with sirens, that is why they are planning to get away with BRT lane violation.
    THIS MUST NOT BE ALLOWED.

  2. Well, I see no wrong-doing in this and the officer is trying to get 2the office at the right time to discharge his duties. Therefore, Fashola and the Federal Govt should make road network free from traffic by providing network trains to ease traffic.

  5. Law is not a respecter of person an it should strictly be followed! Fashola is a leader by example and other should follow suit irrespective of who you are. In-fact I saw Deputy governor passing through my office without siren and without passing thru BRT line. Fashola had shown good example and we must all follow suit if Nigerian must move forward.

  7. I think the Colonel has demonstrated enough courage with the respect given to Gov,. Fashola. He knew he was wrong, and as a mark of respect salute the Governor. I do not think this issue should be over stressed further. Let the miliatry authority come up with their investigation, since Gov. Fashola has escaled the matter. Am sure the Colonel regrets the embarassement to his constituency and himself. So guys, let it be.

  9. Governor Fash tried at least by confronting the army colonel and the Colonel himself must be a humble and a very disciplined senior officer for the way he reacted.

To my understanding, he regretted his action therefor, let's forgive the colonel, allow him to be set free and sin no more.

  12. Well i find no fault with the governor but the stupid Colonel who disgraced himself and the Nigerian Army by coming down from his car. The position of governor can only be occupied by a Major or at worst a Lieutenant Colonel...And he went ahead and payed compliment, by saluting. I'm not advocating for non-compliance with the Law, but it was an Official car and he was flying his flag. Maybe those conversant with how the Military operates would know better.

  13. i think you are ignorant of democratic values by thinking the Colonel ought not to have come out of his car. The Governor is the Chief security officer of Lagos State. the Colonel is just like any other citizen and subject to law of the land. It was during our era of backwardness that a military man becomes a governor and sees himself as special citizen. what is special about official assignment? or official car ? we are talking of law of the land and you are talking about military practices. Military practices should be restricted to the barracks. Military is just a profession like any other profession, so what... it is only in Nigeria and other backward states that a military personnel sees himself as tiny god. An end has come to that era. Let everyone obey the law

  14. I am amazed at how some negative minded people use their medula oblangata. Useless comments by useless people. These are the type that will also do the same if they were in that shoe. Can u just imagine the nonesense excuses made by people. I have no doubt that they are people of the oppoSition parties to Fashola's. And we complain that this country is in a mess when people like this if given the opportunity to rule will destroy this nation with their negative, foolish and useless ways of resoning and making unpadonable excuses to scale thru their lawless acts. Goodness! I am pissed off at the way people make use of the brain God gave them to use positively.

  15. Well, the governor did the right thing by reprimanding the colonel. The colonel is subject to the governor no matter what whether in an official car or official train. If the roads are well done and the bloody LASTMA officials are actually doing their own operational duties instead of running after danfos jst like the police there would be no need for anyone to use either one way or even the BRT lanes. The governor might be a civilian but you are a citizen in his state so you have to comply by his laws or get the hell out.
