Schoolgirl misses exams after she slept in April and woke up in June

A 15-year-old British schoolgirl has just woken up from a two-month sleep to find she had missed nine GCSE exams.

The Sun newspaper reports (UK)  reports that Stacey Comerford suffers from a rare neurological disorder called Kleine-Levin Syndrome, also known as Sleeping Beauty Syndrome.

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, the condition mainly affects adolescent males and is characterized by episodes of excessive sleep.

Affected individuals are completely normal between these episodes but may sleep up to 20 hours a day for extended periods of time. It’s estimated that just 1,000 people worldwide have the condition.
“When she’s in an episode, she might get up to go to the toilet or get a drink but she’s not awake. I call it sleep mode,” her mother Bernie Richards explained to a british newspaper, adding that Stacey has lost nearly 28lbs because of the condition.

“I’ve missed nine exams and my birthday in November,” Stacey said.

Real Life Sleeping Beauty

Stacey started experiencing symptoms about a year ago, but the condition is so rare that she was only diagnosed in March, according to The Mirror.

There is no known cure for Kleine-Levin Syndrome, but some experts believe individuals grow out of it.

  1. There is no type of issue that is actually lacking in this world. How can someone sleep for about 2 months? But that girl looks beautiful even as she is sleeping. May be that is why the condition is called "Sleeping Beauty Syndrome." God help us. FRANK.

  7. In the UK, there is respect for human life. This is the reason why there are making so much progress in life. All these comments you have made show that you have no respect for human life and so you will continue suffering. Why would you think of flogging someone who is sleeping or bathing her with pepper? Do you know the state of her condition? You have rogues there managing your affairs in Government yet you cannot flog them or bath them with pepper. Shameless people. Look at how the country has degenerated because nobody has respect for human life. If you do not read, try to study and carry out research. You are all very pathetic and helpless. God help you.

  8. You're right Health Tips.we have rogues who rule us with koboko and hot pepper. Sometimes, they introduce s little hot water. That's why we're so backward both in our thinking and lifestyle.

  11. Lucky for she ............if she were a Nigerian one confused Dr would have dumped her in the Mogue. Worst still people could have branded her a Witch or what ever. Then if the parents were dubious they will convert her ailment to source of income claiming she is a special one (prophetess). Beleive me, u will see hopeless Nigerian flooding their house doors waiting for miracle.

Worst still one fake Pastor would have used her condition and shine.... he wil go there performing so abrakadabra and when she wakes up......the fake P will claim he resurrected her from death...... Nija way

  12. i wish her well. @anonymous 2 that sounds really brutal. i cant imagine a parent doing that to their own child especially not one with such a condition.

  13. I have been leaving in the UK now nearly 10 years...I can conclude that reading comments from nija from online news reports such as this...it amazes me how some nija people refused to learn rather bring religion or local ideas to bare in their views, which to me advertises to the world of how backward we are still...nothing has really changed...in fact it looks like it becoming worse (may be because of the quality of what you guys are being given everyday in terme of leadership, education, news contents, drama, theater etc), even the people refused to change in their mentality and deep-thinking opinions.

@Anonymous 2, you are really a surprise to me to think you are joking or funning in ur contribution...is madness...but we in the far away countries from you can read your mind/mentality from this contribution..so harsh and delusional...I will expect an empathetic response and if you have not heard of that decease before go study more and read about it b4 making any comments..you are entitle to your own opinion though and I am not kicking you for that but please as a nija in diaspora we need more meaningful and genuine contributions from you guys...I hope this sink!

  14. The westerners like publicity! Am sure the mother chose publicity over her daughter's life, some people who have traveled out since 10 years ago are over there saying TOTAL RUBBISH, there is one simple question, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO SAVE YOUR COUNTRY???, instead you removed your slippers, dusted it and RAN AWAY! Shut up you COWARD!!!!

  15. @Hegel...it is a shame you got my message wrong...but it was not a cheap publicity it is a message about public education and awareness...that is not to say that some does not do cheap publicity, yes some do!...but have you heard of these diseases before?...if no,why not research and verify about it and who knows, you may just be able to safe a life.

Well, you said I am a coward...how?...by being abroad?...our being abroad is not different from Nigerians who moved from Lagos to Kano or to any west African countries for education, businesses and works to be able to enhance and better their lives and also take care of their family (extended in some cases. I thank God I have such an opportunity!

Please take note that diaspora Nijas are contributing millions of dollar to the Nigeria economy by virtue of the foreign currencies they send home to help their people and also SME investments...not only that, many are also contributing to better the lives of some unfortunate and very poor nigerians via some charity organizations that are helping a lot of Nigerians...I bet you even you may not be involved in all these yet...these may not have been possible if we never moved...what moving has helped to do is to help to better understand that there are countries where government love their citizens and take very good care of them...where citizens are better educated...given freedom of speech and right to better life...but all these happens because the citizenry are ready to give more mature and rich contributions in whatever capacity, debate or situations they are faced with...they are ready to take every opportunity to learn and to educate...these are values that we were taught while studying in Nigeria even to the University and we held unto it and we have found out that these teachings/skills are still helping us today even in foreign lands.

Just to let you know I have not run away from Nigeria...in fact I will say our government have taken away Nigeria from us...even you that is staying in Nigeria now have no access to REAL Nigeria...they have made Nigeria far away from you...fight to get it back!

Anyway make your contributions better and rich so that even your government and their agencies will begin to take note and they won't take you guys for ride or fools anymore...that is the point I am making.

I am not fighting anybody...I am not against you...I am for you my friend...I am only saying let us use our senses by showing our better and intelligent sides both in public and private...even while contributing to a news articles as small as this but global in functionality.

God bless you and God bless Nigeria.

  17. All those people castigating anonymous 2 like Health Tip you are the ones sick. That was a joke yet your pomposity and arrogance couldn't let our share in it. Rather you are quick to remind us how bad our country and the leaders are. Shame on you. If you think anything is wrong with the country andnournleaders, then pray for them. A merry heart heals the body. I shared joyfully in that joke.

  18. @Barry... The best speach ever...

As Nigerians we need to be more informative in our thinking and speech. The Developed countries did not get to where they are by flimsy talk, but by a lot of continous research. We need to step up our game. Even Ghana is now a country to recon with.

  19. Reading the comments here have given an insight to why we are where we are today. Congratulations to Anonymous 2. You have gotten the award for Most Interesting Case study. As for the followers who are calling others sick for not finding the comment funny, you all amaze me. Keep laughing! I prefer to be in your own category of SICK than laugh along at the ignorant comment. Shameless and silly lot!

  22. Its a pity the way we view our country including the citizens of our country. every body is ready to lay blame on the next person. the blame should start from ourselves. i ' m sure anonymous 2 just wanted us to laugh and I did so did so many others. its too bad if u don't have a sense of humor. instead u re quick to judge. pls lets find laughter when and where we can get it.
as for the sleeping beauty, i wish her quick recovery
