OCCUPY UNILAG PROTESTS: Next Stop, Federal High Court

Students of the University of Lagos have vowed to take their protest to the Federal High Court on Monday.

The students who began their protest last Tuesday said the moving to the court “would not be violent but heavy.”

A law student, who identified himself as Oladiran Ayodele, said the new venue for demonstration was to pass a message to President Goodluck Jonathan that he acted illegally and usurped the powers of the Act of Parliament by choosing to rename the university.

He said, “President Jonathan’s action was a total breach and subversion of the democratically established principle of separation of powers. Based on the Kathleen Ola Ope/University of Lagos 2001 10 Nigerian Weekly Law Report, part 720, Pg 121, the court stated that the president can’t act without consulting the Act of Parliament regulating the affairs of the university.”

Ayodeji said that the students, together with 30 Senior Advocates of Nigeria, the university’s alumni and the Academic Staff Union of Universities would be on ground.

He said, “We will not give up until this battle is won. We can’t rely on the senators any longer. We students have received information that money is being exchanged and there is every possibility that the case will die. We won’t allow that. That is why we want the high court to overturn the case.”

Ayodeji also said students were planning on getting the direct phone numbers of all senators, “Senators will start to debate on the bill next week; we will get their direct lines to make life uncomfortable for them.”

Another law student who identified himself as Tola alleged that, “Senators are already collecting money. We are going to court.”

Another student, Awopeju Idowu, faulted the decision of policemen to spray teargas at students during Friday’s protest, saying students would resort to social media platforms to make their views heard.

“We have re-formatted our protest to an intellectual warfare to guide against falling prey to trigger-happy policemen. But our protest won’t stop, no matter what happens.”
