Fresh Lagos-Ibadan Expressway accident on same spot as the last one, 25 vehicles destroyed

Danko village on the Lagos/Ibadan expressway recorded its second multiple road accident in 48 hours, triggering another traffic chaos on the highway yesterday.
The inferno occurred on Saturday at the same location of the accident that happened 2 days ago destroying 24 vehicles.

Fifteen articulated vehicles, a luxury bus, five mini buses, a car and two pick-up vans were completely burnt in the accident that happened in the early hours of the morning.

The accident was reportedly caused by a petrol tanker that fell on the expressway.

No live was lost in the multiple accidents which occurred at the junction to the Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State. One person was however said to have sustained injuries.

A number of trucks loaded with frozen fish, poultry feed, rice, assorted drinks and other valuables worth millions of Naira were destroyed in the inferno.

As at 9:25 am when reporters visited the scene of the accident, fire fighters were still making frantic efforts to bring the inferno under control.

The wife of the Oyo State governor, Mrs. Florence Ajimobi, former Deputy Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Edwards Ayo-Odugbesan, and thousands of worshippers who had gone to attend the monthly Holy Ghost Service of the Redeemed Christian Church of God were trapped for hours in the gridlock caused by the accident.

The traffic jam stretched over 20 kilometres, causing hardship to commuters.
The Zonal Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in charge of Ogun and Lagos, Mr. Demola Lawal, and the Sector Commander in charge of Ogun State, Mr. Ayobami Omiyale, told newsmen that the multiple accident occurred at 2:18 am.

Lawal said, “We were trying to evacuate the last burnt vehicles in an accident that happened about two days ago when a tractor punctured a tanker carrying petrol and there was an outflow of the product. It spread all over the highway and all of a sudden there was an explosion. Everybody ran for their lives.

“We immediately notified people that the product was all over the highway so that they could vacate their cars and escape. That assisted in not recording any casualty; also men of the fire service from Ogun State were on ground to put the fire under control.”

The Commander of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance Corps, Mr. Ayo Sangofadeji, said he and his men had to scale a 12 metre fence to escape being hurt by the explosion from the tanker.

The TRACE commander added that the only victim had already been taken to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu for treatment.
The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Ikemefuna Okoye, who was also at the accident scene said, “The FRSC, TRACE, will ensure there is a free flow of traffic.”

Governor Ibikunle Amosun who was also at the scene for an on-the-spot assessment, expressed regret at the development and advised all road users to be more cautious to forestall recurrence.

In a related development, the Commandant of Federal Road Safety Corps in Funtua, Katsina State, Mr. Betara Umar, has confirmed the death of three persons in a road accident that occurred in the area on Friday.

Umar told the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday that 17 other passengers sustained injuries in the accident, which involved a bus and a car.
