Also, the National President of the Campaign for Democracy, Mrs. Joe Okei-Odumakin, has advocated a post-humous declaration of Abiola as an ex-president of Nigeria.
Head of Abiola family and a younger brother to the late politician, Alhaji Mubashiru Abiola, stated this at their family house in Abeokuta when some officials of Ogun State Government led by Governor Ibikunle Amosun and a campaign train of civil society groups visited them as part of activities marking the 19th anniversary of the annulment of the election.
While describing his late brother as the ‘sacrificial lamb’ for democracy in Nigeria’ Abiola lamented that, the family had been neglected, noting that the only thing that could make the soul of the deceased rest in peace is for the Federal Government to declare him as an ex- President of the country.
He said: “The renaming of University of Lagos after MKO is not enough as a winner of the election, he deserves more than that considering his contribution for the democracy to thrive in Nigeria.
“The family members have been living in penury since the demise of our bread winner, the Federal Government has never extended any hand of assistance to us since then except the Ogun state Government”.
Addressing the family members of the late politician, Governor Ibikunle Amosun said Abiola was the man who represented all that is being enjoyed today as democracy, stressing that Abiola laid down his life for peace and tranquility in Nigeria.
Amosun, who later addressed people at MKO Abiola Stadium hinted that, the Government might declare a public holiday on his birthday to create more consciousness for his contribution saying, if Abiola had failed to do what he had done, there would not be democracy as all Nigerians not minding their political affiliations with one voice and through their votes elected a leader in the late Abiola. Yes he deserve more than that Nigeria nation should be named after him to properly immortalize him if that will be enough.
