CPC will soon merge with ACN to curb PDP dominance - Buhari

The 2011 presidential candidate and leader of the Congress for Progressive Change, (CPC), Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, said yesterday that his party would soon reach an accord with the Action Congress of Nigeria, (ACN), on how to wrestle power from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in 2015.

However, General Muhammadu Buhari and the former governor of Lagos State and national leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday met in Kaduna to conclude plans on how to capture power from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) through the 2015 general election.

Though the ACN national leader (Tinubu) could not confirm the actual purpose of the meeting which was attended by Ogun State governor Ibikunle Amosun, Ekiti State governor Dr. Kayode Fayemi, former FCT minister Mal. Nasir el-rufai and former works minister Dr. Hassan Lawal, But sources gathered that the meeting was aimed at finalising discussion on the alliance of the country’s strongest opposition parties.

The meeting lasted for hours and strategised on how to prepare for the 2015 general election.

The meeting, held at the official residence of Gen. Buhari, had about 10 national leaders of the ACN and over 20 national leaders of the CPC.

General Buhari and the ACN national leader, who spoke to journalists at the end of the first meeting, told Nigerians that “by 2015 we are certainly likely to see a formidable opposition”.

According to Tinubu, “We hope to see a positive change in 2015 and not opposition. We don’t want to be perpetually in opposition. Every politician wants an opportunity to govern.”

Buhari also revealed, “I can tell you that the merger talks are on but the outcome is not yet for you. No deal on the merger talks. As soon as the deal is struck, you will know.”

The two parties made attempt to work together to stop President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011 but the alliance did not work, giving the president a smooth ride to the Villa at the end of the April poll.

However, the leaders soon returned to the drawing board to work out a modality that would make it impossible for the PDP to sweep the polls in 2015.

  1. Common sense has prevailed at last. Buhari cannot be the presidential candidate as he is a subject of division. Give him a poweful anti corruption role. They should also see if they can get APGA onboard as that will be the icing on the cake. The presidential candidate must be very very carufully chosen and should be a uniter and being from the north will not be suitable. PDP is evil and must go!

  4. Buhari is not sell-able in Nigeria Politics and among Nigerian Populace. If they can bring in someone with reputable character that can will the mind of the people someone with no religious extremism and regional dichotomy, that will be a strong opposition. But if it is Buhari, then NO! NO!! NO!!! they will gather but will fall yakata before PDP as aforetimes.

  8. The reason why people are condemning Buhari was because, he was not patient as a result of the last elections and if people take a look critically, it was after that election when Buhari display his annoyance to the people of Nigerians’ that Boko haram started, if he had been patient enough may be the people of Nigerians’ would have said let’s try Buhari once again, since our expectations as Nigerians’ is not forth coming by Goodluck, this is not politics at all or religious matter, nor self centered, we are talking about those that will move this country forward therefore, all these people should stop forcing themselves on Nigerians’ because, Nigerians’ are not fools, somebody like me will shine my eyes well well, I will not come out to vote for Buhari nor Goodluck, it could be somebody else, otherwise, God will force them out of power, they don’t have any good agenda nor mission for this Great Country of Nigeria. Nigerians’ pray before you cast your vote this time around. God bless Nigerians’ may He restore peace again to Nigerians’ amen…

  9. "However, the leaders soon returned to the drawing board to work out a modality that would make it impossible for the PDP to sweep the polls in 2015."

This is direct from the article. And I ask: "Is this journalism?" Are you giving news or rooting for one party against the other? I read you almost everyday, but I take exception to this type as a fellow journalist living away from home. Give us the 5 WH-statements of the story with minimal analysis, and let us, your readers do the rest. The PDP deserve to win as much as any other party. Let us pray for a level playing field and get a credible election come 2015. The goal is not to beat PDP, but to have a good election. I have my comments will meet with good understanding.
