America Freezes Nigerian Embassy accounts in the US. Nigeria threatens to reciprocate.

Bank of America, M&T Bank and Wells Fargo received directive from the US government to close the accounts of the Nigerian embassy in Washington and its consulate in New York on suspicion of money laundering after traffic on the various accounts raised a red flag.

$3.6 million dollars was said to have entered and left the accounts in under a month, the latest transaction being the withdrawal of $50,000 in hard cash by a top embassy staff.

The decision to freeze the accounts is sequel to intelligence report generated by a panel comprising representatives of the US Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and the Department of Treasury, unknown to Nigerian embassy officials, to monitor wires and traffic in all the accounts operated by the embassy.

As part of efforts to resolve the issue, the auditor-general of the federation and a team of auditors left for the US to begin auditing the accounts of the embassy. Efforts by embassy officials to open new bank accounts with other American banks have so far been politely turned down.

The US have also ignored all requests by the federal government to unfreeze Nigerian embassy's bank accounts in Washington, DC, and New York. The move, according to sources, is setting the stage for a potential showdown between the two countries with Nigeria also threatening to reciprocate by freezing the US embassy's accounts in the country.

  1. NA NIGERIA GO LOOSE, WE KNOW WE'RE BAD AND WE JUST PRETEND LIKE WE'RE DEFENDING OUR OWN. SOMEONE IS STEALING AT THE EMBASSY. NIGERIA SHOULD NOT TRY AND FREEZE ANYTHING, NIGERIA IS THE ONE THAT WILL LOOSE.

  2. Well, this is what goes on in a transparent country, banks and government work together against corruption but in Nigeria, despite all the rules on banking, there is money laundery everyday with the banks as accomplice.

For Nigeria government to think of freezing US account is another celebration of corruption; they want to pretend that nothing is happening instead of investigating and punishing offenders.

Talking of investigating, who will investigate who now?

  3. My country stinks. If I were in the Force - any of the Forces, I would have struck, seize power, clear all this rot and immediatelyorganize a free election to return power to the people.

  4. Imagine the bunch of idiots at the helm of affairs in Nigeria. They think everywhere is like Nigeria where corruption thrives with no one to ask questions. They wants to use diplomatic opportunity to siphon money. Forgetting that this is advance county whereby everything is monitored. We d citizens of that country has become object of ridicule all over the world. See what is happening in house of rep. Nigeria has become a country whereby government officials compete on who to loot most. Security is in shambles. Nigeria is a complete fail state under this stupid regime.

  5. We need competent legal experts to step in here. I am not sure the US has the right to do what it is said to have done, if indeed the bank account is that of the Nigerian Embasssy in that country.

  7. @Savage,

U don't know anything..Must u violate laws & orders of another country because u are an envoy there?Cash handling in Western countries is highly controlled unlike your disordered country,Nigeria. They are protecting the validity of their currencies. It's highly regulated!

  8. I believe this is a unique opportunity for the Federal Government to go into the details as to why the accounts were frozen. Every opportunity available should be taped to exhume the culprits. I trust American Government before this action is taken against Nigerian Government they must have in hand some serious allegation against the culprits. I anticipate Nigerian Government cooperation with the American Government, not confrontation. The CIA and other intelligent Agencies must have had enough of these unprogressive Nigerians and this is why the USA government embarrass Nigerian Government. The action from the American Government is highly commendable and should be respected by all Nigerians. Enough of stealing crude oil money and money laundering! President Jonathan should investigate the money laundering and rather than freezing America's account in Nigeria, he should in turn commend the action of the American Government. Money laundering is dangerous in any country because its effect is devastating on the economy. If you did not know why Nigeria currency is N155 to one American dollar, the CBN should be in a better position to tell you why! I pray for Nigeria to survive the influence of satanic influence on the populace.
