Aftermath of Dana plane crash: Pilots beg Nigerians not to shun flying

The National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers on Friday appealed to Nigerians to have faith in the aviation industry as investigation into the Dana plane crash continues.

A Dana plane from Abuja crashed on Sunday in the Iju-Ishaga suburb of Lagos, killing all 153 people on board.

The President of NAAPE, Mr. Isaac Balami, who made the appeal at a news briefing at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, said the strike embarked upon by the union members in Air Nigeria over welfare has been called off.

“We will do everything possible to make sure that Nigerians have faith in the aviation sector again. Nigerians should feel free to fly and with time we will get over it.
“Nigerians should not listen to speculations that the ill–fated engines failed or the engineers were not doing their work.

“Accident does not have anything to do with the age of an aircraft. Let us wait till the result of the investigation comes out.

“We in NAAPE do not have information on Dana Airline pilots and engineers’ welfare conditions because they have been prohibited from joining the union, so we cannot regulate their engineers or pilots,” he said.

He appealed to management of airlines to provide reasonable welfare packages for their staff, particularly the pilots and engineers.

He said that the union was working hand-in-hand with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority to ensure that aircrafts were adequately checked before flying.

“If there are safety issues, we go to the NCAA to address it and the agency is always ready to resolve the issue with NAAPE. This sector is very sensitive.

“The NCAA has the right to tell the public if any airlines or engineers have been cutting corners,” he said.
