With Joseph Yobo out of the crunch World Cup qualifying duel against Namibia on Sunday in Calabar, Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi has named Vincent Enyeama, as the captain for the team.
The France-based goalkeeper is expected to remain in that position on interim basis pending the return of Yobo to the team. The defender was ruled out of the match due to an injury he suffered during a cup game with his Turkish club Fenerbahce just two days before the list for the June qualifying games was released by Keshi.
Twenty-two players featured in the Monday morning training session which commenced at about 7.30 inside the Abraham Ordia mini stadium, University of Calabar. The foreign-based professionals who trained yesterday were Sone Aluko, Victor Moses, Ikechukwu Uche, Efe Ambrose, Fengor Ogude, Elderson Echejile, Gege Soriola, Ekigho Ehiosun, Ahmed Musa and Enyeama. They were joined by the 12 home-based stars unveiled at the weekend and led by Warri Wolves goalie, Chigozie Agbim.
Montpellier of France attacker John Utaka and Israeli-based goalkeeper, Austin Ejide, later joined the team.
And as he had done many times recently, Keshi promised Nigerians that the team will not disappoint them in their qualifying match against Namibia.
He says that although the home-based and the foreign-based professionals to be used in the match may not be the best the country has, the players will not disappoint the country as they are in the best mood to make the country proud.
He said, “Well, the truth is that first of all, the home-based players we have here are not the best players at home, they are only privileged to be selected. The professionals from outside the country are also not the best of the professionals that we have.
“But we have to blend them together. We have to seek for a balance and create opportunities for the other home-based players and other younger professionals playing in Europe that have not been seen and had been neglected.
“This is a nice opportunity for them, we are not experimenting. We know the abilities of the players and we just want Nigerians to watch good football.”
