We are living in difficult times – FG

The Federal Government has again lamented the spate of violence in the country, saying “we are living in difficult times.”

The Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, at a news conference on Monday to commemorate the 2012 Democracy Day and the first anniversary of the Jonathan administration, blamed the problem on a few people who are bent on pulling the country backward.

The briefing was attended by the Minister of Health Dr. Onyebuchi Chukwu, and his counterpart in the Ministry of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu.
Maku, who condemned the incessant attacks in the North by suspected Boko Haram members, insisted that they were aimed at frustrating President Goodluck Jonathan’s effort to develop the country.

He urged Nigerians to resist the plan of terror groups to discourage them, adding that they should assist in the efforts to unmask those behind the violence in the country.
The minister said, “We are living in difficult times. There are people among us that are out to set us back; those who would stop at nothing to render the progress and achievements of this government to jeopardy and irrelevance.

“To the best of my knowledge, there is no war in Nigeria between Muslims and Christians. We have a situation of terrorist groups in Pakistan and other countries. Let me assure Nigerians that the purpose of this is to discourage us but we must all stand together each time our country falls under attacks.
“Even as things are, there are men and women defending this nation and they would not be deterred. You will notice that in recent time, there has been greater success.”
Maku, who said the violence in the North would affect its development, urged the people to assist the government in fighting terrorism.
