UNILAG declares three days of mourning

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has declared three days of mourning in honour of its 10th Vice-Chancellor who died at the weekend.

During the period, which begins today, all lectures, statutory meetings and other university activities at its three campuses at Akoka, Yaba and Idi-Araba, including ISL and Staff School - will not hold.

It was learnt that Sofoluwe suffered a heart attack in his office at the Department of Computer Science but managed to call his doctor from the Medical Centre.

The doctor reportedly brought him to the Medical Centre in an ambulance.

The late academic was said to have been transferred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), where he was diagnosed with Myocardial Infarction. He was resuscitated before he was transferred to the High Dependency Unit in Ward E8 of LUTH. Unfortunately, he suffered a second heart attack and efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

A post-mortem examination has reportedly been carried out and it confirmed the cause of death to be of cardiac origin.

UNILAG said it has opened condolence registers at Senate House, Julius Berger Hall, The Vice-Chancellor’s Lodge, The College of Medicine, Post-Graduate (PG) School, all faculties, the Distance Learning Institute (DLI) and all halls of residence.

The university has set up a burial committee, headed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Research), Prof Babajide Alo.
The committee will work out the burial arrangements.
