The Lagos State Government has ordered doctors sacked in the wake of the crisis rocking the health sector to vacate their official quarters.
The eviction notice dated May 8, 2012, and signed by the Secretary of the Staff Housing Board on behalf of the Head of Service, Mr I.A Shoyemi, directed the doctors to vacate their official residence with immediate effect.
The doctors said they received the notice on Thursday.
The letter stated, “Consequent upon your dismissal from the service of the Lagos State Government with effect from May 4, 2012 and in accordance with the civil service rule, “No officer shall continue to occupy state government quarters after the date on which his resignation or dismissal takes effect.
“I wish to request you to vacate the state government staff quarters.
“In view of the above, you are hereby requested to submit the keys to the quarters to the Secretary of Staff Housing Board.”
The affected doctors had been given until Friday (today) morning to vacate the staff quarters.
Reacting to the development, the first Vice-Chairman of the state chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association, Dr Johnson Emene condemned the government; saying according to the State Tenancy Law, tenants should be given six months notice prior to eviction.
He added that the NMA had begun negotiations with the government to find a solution to the crisis in the state.
“We have told the doctors not to panic. Within the next 13 hours and after the meeting with Governor Fashola, we are going to know the next step to take.

ReplyDeleteFASHOLA I SUPPORT U DIE,they ave forgotten their job is to serve Humanity,No wonder Dr are now in politics.Dr Olusola saraki,Prof Jubril Aminu,Dr Ngige etc,Evict them jor
ReplyDeleteforgoing humanity for monity
The press is not fair in this matter.Their write up tends to favour the govt,How can they be evicted when negotiation is still going on? It was reported that Fasola has employed Doctors when Lasuth is now a ghost of itself, cant the press visit Lasuth?Fashola had better stop this rubbish, his advisers are mad.
ReplyDeleteLet them go, since they have forgotten their oath of office to save human life and pursuing money. Govt. please don't accept them back into health sector, so that it will serve as a lesson to others.
ReplyDeleteThe doctors continue to show a great level of indolence and pride towards citizens they were meant to serve. They have placed their personal interest above their oath to serve and save lives. The Government is 100% right and if they can successfully stop this, it will be a lesson to others who won't yield. They have private hospitals and at the same time do part-time service with their government job yet ask for request that must be fulfilled in a do or die manner. They have turned worse than our corrupt politicians. Let them go home and rest if they are tired of working. If LASUTH doesn't have new doctors immediately sooner or later they will employ. Lots of doctors are out there looking for Job.
ReplyDeleteGood job Great Governor Fashola. I live in Canada and I usually tell my friends here that Canada should make 9ja doctors start grade 12 if they choose to come here. I have lost my dad and elder brother to doctors (paid killers) in Portharcourt and Igbobi hospital.
ReplyDeleteThe government overrates these doctors, while they underrate other health workers. Solution:
ReplyDelete1) Let the government unify all health workers salary scale.
2) Let them pay the same call allowance to every health workers based on the number of hours done.
3) Let them unify the entry level based on their first degree whether MBBS, MBCHB, BSc or BNSc and promote them based on the number of years and certification in their different field.
4) Reduce the residency fee/allowance payed to resident doctors or scrap it totally.
5) Total overhaul of the hospital facilities
By these solutions the government will save a lot of money and cost in running health sectors while all health workers will feel ok with the just/fair treatment.
In this matter, I will not support the doctors neither will I support the Government. The both of them swore an oath to protect people and both have defiled that hope. This matter shld not have gotten to this but they both did not behave maturely. If you calculate very well, what this doctors want is nothing. The government had already agreed to their terms then why back off now.
ReplyDeleteI tell you, what Fashola has done has brought a new dimension to unionism in Nigeria. In this page he has opened, there will be no trust again between Labour and Government.
The doctors on there part did not do well. I was at Igbodi today and the place was deserted and I asked 'if someone comes with an emergency what happens?' and the answer was 'may his soul rest in peace.' This, I say is not right on the part of the doctors.
