Strike: Health Minister vows to keep hospitals open

Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, said, yesterday, that Federal Government would ensure hospitals were not shut to the public despite the strike by health workers.

The health workers, under the umbrella of the Joint Health Sector Unions, JHSU, declared an indefinite nationwide strike, Monday, following the failure of
both parties to resolve their differences after a 15-day warning strike.

Addressing journalists in Abuja, the Health Minister expressed surprise at the strike, despite ongoing talks between the union and government.

Vowing to ensure that hospital services were not crippled, Prof. Chukwu said: “My job is to make sure that my hospitals are functioning. We will target our efforts at ensuring that.”

Areas of contention are: salary CONHESS 10; National Health Bill, Presidential Committee Report on Harmony in the Health Sector, promotion of health professionals from CONHESS 14 to 15; consultancy and specialist allowance and call/shift and other professional allowances.

Others are implementa-tion of 2008 Job Evaluation Committee Report, re-constitution of board of managements of teaching and other tertiary hospitals, need for review of retirement ages and appointment of ministers of health.

”There is no reason for the present strike. Nigerians are tired. We are beginning loose our sense of direction.

“All these are not serious issues to embark on strike upon and at the expense of the masses. This issue cannot amount to industrial dispute. I appeal to them to continue with the dialogue.”

  1. The minister of Health need to be serious ,In the health sector other health workers are treated like shit.Virtually every committee in the hospital including servicom is headed by doctors, even when we see the life threatening mistakes they make, they cover up their tracks.
The question i have for the minister is this, why as your ministry been insensitive to the plight of other health workers, why the disapproval of salary CONHESS 10.In my opinion other health workers have been too patients, compare to your fellow doctors that are so greedy in nature with disrespect to the oat they took.I am saying this because I see what doctors do in the consulting rooms, atimes they give wrong treatment/ drug prescription, for it to be discovered by a pharmacist dispensing the drugs, the nurse who wants to administer the drugs or even the most dreaded medical laboratory scientist that carries out drug assays and other laboratory investigations to know the cause of infirmities.
In a nut shell my advice to the minister is this, try to treat this people well so that the lives of fellow Nigerian will be well catered for .I am not really in support of the strike, but after much investigation in the past one year I realise most Nigeria health workers are living the shores of our dear country to other countries to seek greener pasture, and the irony of every thing is that they are doing well out there.God bless Nigeria

  2. God is not asleep. He is doing great work for us Nigerians and for our lovely country. Let his promises be anchored in your heart. Have faith in Him. God is not asleep over what is happening. Keep praying for this nation and her present government. Isaiah 3: 10 says, it is well. Only God can put an end to every urgly trend in this country, in Jesus name. Please, say amen!
Say always, JOB 22:29 “When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; He shall save the humble person. My hope, courage, and strength every day to live for.
    Thanks

  3. Indolence + pride is raining in Nigeria. May the Lord have mercy. Why does government become over sensitive to doctors' strike and insensitive to other health workers? There is no where in the world where the doctors hold their nation to ransom all in the name of get it all. Let them privatise all hospitals if that is the case and give every citizen access to subsidized health insurance. These doctors have become an apology! Let the minister follow the path of Lagos State Governor and sack those who don't appear for work. At least after the strike they will then fight for payment of unworked hours. Who does this in a civilized world?
