Following the change of the name of University of Lagos to Moshood Abiola University by President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday morning, Angry students poured on the streets of Yaba, Lagos to protest sighting fears of rejection and possibility that the great "UNILAG" name will now be looked down on because of the new name given to it.

Angry students blocked the major road leading into yaba, as traffic piled up.

NigerianEye gathered that The Nigerian Police tried to persuade the students to leave the road and allow free flow of traffic, but the angry students ignored, raining abuses at the Nigerian President, screaming and carrying placards with inscriptions:  "Reverse or Resign, UNILAG can’t be called MAU!"

The Lagos State Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations, Mr. Tunde Sobulo, who led policemen who monitored the students’ protest made a strong appeal to them before they allowed a free flow of traffic.

Some of the students, who spoke with our correspondents, said that the decision was not well-thought out.
“If this decision is not reversed, it will affect the image and global ranking of the university. When this happens, all of us, past and present students, will suffer,” Mr. James Mgurujwen, a 400-Level student in the faculty of education said.

Another student, who simply identified himself as Stephen, said though he did not see anything wrong in immortalising Abiola, UNILAG should not be sacrificed for this purpose.

“I did not know Abiola. I was in primary one in 1993 but my dad told me he loved football and had a football club. If that is true the President should have named the National Stadium after him instead of our university,” the 200-Level student in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences said.

Taiwo Rowaiye, a 400-level student, said it was unfortunate that the president could change the name of the university and close his eyes to the pitiable conditions in which they learn.
He said, “Its clear that we don’t have a caring president. Instead of making teaching and learning convenient for us he is renaming the university.

“There is epileptic supply of electricity to the university campus. Just yesterday we only had two hours of power supply.

“Our hostels are in despicable conditions and we often times attend classes without taking our bath all because their is no electricity to pump water.

“Besides, our classrooms are overcrowded and we take lectures in suffocating classrooms and all he could do to better our lot is to rename our university.”

Students still blocked the yaba road till about 2pm yesterday before they allowed free flow of traffic.

The Angry students however threatened to block major roads in Lagos, including the Third-Mainland bridge in the coming days.

  1. This era of renaming institution should cease in our nation. We expect mr. President to focus on creating a very condusive learning environment with modern facilities. What improvement will this new name make on the institution? Our president should focus on more important things such as insecurity ąЙd̶̲̥̅̊ bad political ąЙd̶̲̥̅̊ judiciary systems. â„“̊ hate the name MAU to the core. There exists already a polytechnics in his name.

  2. Mr President, i think you have finally done it. we have been waiting for this for long. MKO is the hero of democracy. renaming unilag after him is a great decision.

  3. Mr President, this is "BULLSHIT"! Why rename UNILAG to MAU; the name itself "sucks"! You have greater things at stake to worry about. Now, you have angry students to add to the list. I wish you well; ALWAYS listen to your heart before taking a decision and not from your AdViSeRs.

  5. If this was done in April I would have guessed it was an expensive joke.
Besides,MKO is not one of the heroes truth be said. He only appears to be one by default,my apologies.
unless we forgot the gamut of corruption allegations, old and even more recently, that he had been fingered. ITT?

SOME DAY OUR CHILDREN WOULD BE FORCED TO CALL OBJ,GEJ ETC HEROES. SHAME!!!

  6. I'm terribly disappointed by the shallow thinking of these 'future leaders'. Protesting because the acronym MAU doesn't sound nice is absolutely vain. What has Nigeria turned into? A better university was renamed OAU and there was no problem. It's a big shame. There seems to be no depth in these unrgraduates at all. So terribly scared of Nigeria's future

  7. Mr Anonymous above, Renaming Unilag after MKO is like renaming Cambridge after Winston Churchill. The name is an identity o the school. people who already hold the certificate like me will also be affected. you will now have to explain the MAU is the same as Unilag and different from MAPoly. its just unnecessary, nothing stopped GEJ from naming one of the universities he is building after MKO

  9. Actually,Abiola would have been named after one of the new Universities or Airport etc and not after a School that has cut a nitch for itself. The name Unilag has become symbolic in the mind of Nigerians and it commands respect. GEJ should have sought the opinion of others b4 taking that decision. Reversing the MAU thing now is odd and maintaining it is undemocratic. Pls GEJ always consult to reduce trouble for yourself.
Finally, MKO is not my heroe. Anulling the June 12 election, thou not right by human standard, was a divine act. MKO is a religious bigot and quite selfish. He bought and sank a container load of Holy Bible that was meant to be distributed in Nigeria and consequently incured the wrath of God. Nobody who poke his hand into God's eyes can go unpunished. He is also one of the pioneers of corruption in Nigeria having amassed much wealth for himself from our common wealth. He was equally seeking favor from the Islamic extremist with the alleged plan to Islamise Nigeria. IBB was unfortunately used to do Gods will. Long Live Nigeria.

  10. This is such a sad development and I pray the President will reverse his action for the sake of the future. Unilag might lose its international credibility if nothing is done about it.

  11. Not forgeting that Ogun state Polytechnic,Ojere has already been named after him...So why UNILAG again?

  12. Please find better reasons to protest, not for a mere change of name.

  13. Its very stupid and foolish of the students. Protests are not bad, but when you protest for the wrong reasons, it becomes detestable.

I see nothing wrong with the name change. We have Obafemi Awolowo, Nnamdio Azikiwe etc universities. Its just a matter of pride by the ill-advised students

  14. The so called students should better go and read their books rather than protesting. Renaming UNILAG is a great thing for any reasonable Yoruba person, so stop protesting unnecessarily.

  15. MANUnited fans now have a skol in Nigeria! Am so happy for united fans all ova d country. Let us come 2geda n move forward 2geda. Secondly, it seems Nigerians place emphasis on names, rather dan quality?? Unilag's quality is not affected by name, so watz d fuzz all abt? We as nigerians should begin to address d real problems, n not blaming it on sum lousy excuses of name changes. Unilag, uniyaba, mau wateva men, not of essence. Quality isn't affected by name, n vise versa

  16. Most commentators made some reasonable contribution...yes name doesn't affect the quality of the education, yes Abiola should be immortalized, yes students have the right to protest and be given genuine reasons and yes MAUnited (lol). And I tell you solemnly, a name is everything- it's like a brand recognized even in dreams. UNILAG is already and established brand that needs not to be unbranded in the middle of their journey.Aside the brand thing...one student made a very important point - there will be confusion in ascertaining old certificates/new certificates with MAU, changing of documents across the globe and think about other schools already named MA! When Imo State University was approved by the former governor to take another name Evan Enwerem University, it brought a lot of difficulties and expenses for students seeking post graduate admissions in the UK/US, they had to find ways to locate the name of the new institution and the officials even had doubts; so it really messed up some people. Please, President GEJ should name one of the new universities after Bashroun. Thank you!

  17. Our Identity is not a cog in the wheel of progress of this nation but a pride, Moshood Kashimawo Abiola is a great hero to this country. If our president wants 2 honour him through UNILAG let him build more hostels and tagged them after the great patriotic leader. MR GOOD LUCK please do something about unemployment of youths in this nation a change of name has nothing to do with our VISION 2020. BOKO ARAM should be ur concern for now. remember all this mishaps of innocent killing are tagged 2 ur name do something, I personally regret voting u. UNILAG STUDENTS we shall fight this to finish this is another avenue to increase our school fees. let's fight for the generation to come. this is a political strategy

  18. I don't see the reason for renaming the great UNILAG to Moshood Abiola University. It is not that Abiola was bad, but not this highly regarded University that has gained popularity for many years now because of the name and quality of its courses. I did not school there but I have my high regards for it. Mr President, please rescind your decision and find another good thing for LATE Chief Abiola. Let UNILAG remain.

  19. I think changing of Name has nothing to do with quality of Education and ranking of the university. These students should find a better reason to protest..
