Peace Maker Murdered With Pestle

The marital squabble between a woman, Affiong Effiong, and her husband, Emmanuel Jacob Udoaba, has resulted in the death of the woman’s elder brother and father of three.

Etim Effiong was murdered when Emmanuel, in a fit of anger, hit him on the head with a pestle.
The incident occurred at Esuk Mba Road, Maternity Junction at Akpabuyo, a suburb of Calabar, Southsouth Nigeria.

Trouble started when Emmanuel reportedly engaged his wife in a fight following marital squabble. After the fight, the woman reportedly fled to her family house some metres away from their residence.

Mother of the deceased, Mrs. Effiong, told newsmen that the 20-year old Affiong and her husband fought and that “Affiong had to run away from the house. But Emmanuel followed her here and said she must go back that night.”

The distraught woman said when Emmanuel insisted that his wife must return home that night, Etim, a motorcycle mechanic, told the man that it was late and that he should return to his house and come back the next day for the settlement of the matter with his wife.

This was said to have infuriated Emmanuel who immediately pounced on his wife, prompting Etim to intervene.

Not satisfied, Emmanuel allegedly went to the kitchen at the back of the building and brought a pestle with which he struck Etim on the head and he slumped and died on the spot.

Lamenting the tragic killing of her son, Mrs. Effiong described her late son as her pillar of support whenever she was in need, asking “now that he is no more, where do I go for help?”

Emmanuel who escaped that night after the act, returned to the village the next morning and was arrested by the police at Ikot Offiong.

He was later transferred to the State Police Command Headquarters at Diamond Hill where he is currently being detained.

The Police Public Relations Officer for the Cross River State Police Command, ASP Hogan Bassey, said investigation is being carried out and once it is completed, the man will be arraigned in court.
