The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) has thrown its weight behind agitations by the people of the south east to take a shot at the country’s presidency in 2015.
The NUJ President, Mr Mohammed Garba, made the declaration at a conference with the theme: “Rediscovering lost Igbo values,” in Awka on Monday.
The workshop was organised by the Anambra council of the NUJ in collaboration with Orient Magazine, Newspaper and Communications Ltd.
Garba, who observed that the zone was visibly marginalised in the country’s polity, explained, however, that he was not speaking as a politician.
Garba advised politicians in the zone to endeavour to unite and put their house in order if they hoped to achieve their ambition of giving Nigeria a chief executive in its 52 years of existence.
“There is the need for unity in the south east. We share some of your concerns, but the best way to achieve the desire of the zone producing a president for Nigeria in 2015 is to be united,” he said.
In an opening remark, former Governor of Anambra, Dr Chukwuemeka Ezeife, expressed hope that the zone would produce the president of the country by 2015.
“By 2015, every geo-political zone in Nigeria must have supplied Nigeria with a chief executive for at least five years in its 52 years of self-rule except one. That is the south east,” he said.
Ezeife, who chaired the occasion, advised the people of the zone not to behave in a way that would suggest that they were in the vanguard of hounding the president out of office after massively supporting him become president.
Delivering a lecture on the conference theme, the Chairman of Orient Magazine, Newspapers and Communications Ltd, co-sponsor of the value re-orientation conference, Mr Godwin Ezeemo, observed that “absolute anarchy had been loosed upon the Igbo world.”
He said that 52 years after independence, “Ndigbo are still wallowing in moral, social and political backwardness as they are often seen as underdogs, stooges and pushovers that can easily be manipulated.
“This is perhaps why we are at the receiving end. This is why economic policies made for the good of the entire country affects the economic status of Ndigbo adversely," he said.
Ezeemo observed that youths from the zone had at the moment taken to kidnapping for ransom, advance fee fraud (419) and cyber crimes because of the erosion of the core Igbo values.
According to him, the age old tradition of the Igbo which regarded these crimes as abominable had been jettisoned.
“The die-hard Igbo tradition which designated the Igbo as a special people known for hard work, resilience and hospitality has been thrown to the dogs. Respect for elders now belongs to the distant past,” he said.
Other personalities who graced the occasion included former Vice-President Alex Ekwueme, and Gov. Peter Obi of Anambra, represented by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Chief Maja Umeh,
Others are former Governor of the state, Dame Virgy Etiaba, and former Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof. Peter Ejiofor, among others.

Fellow Nigerians, it is with great surprise to hear that people are trying to persuade our dear President – Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to have a direct talk with the so called Boko Haram killers. Where on earth should such destroyers call on their president without any bit of regard on his person / office, issue an automaton of going to commit more havoc to lives and properties should the president fail to yield to their call?

(1). In abid to actualize the EVIL agenda of the BOKO HARAM, president GEJ has been marked to be killed in disguise of requesting that a direct talk with him should be organized.
This is a set up by whoever that did it, to have Nigerian president killed (this Ijaws will not take lightly), throw Nigerians into War, spilt the nation, disrupt the government of a southerner which is the bedrock of NORTHERNERS PROVOKATION.
(2). GEJ is neither a weak nor I- don’t- Care Leader as many have summarized him for. The truth remains that supporters of BOKO HARAM are almost in every sector of GEJ government, including both the National Assembly and the Judiciary. GEJ is not alone in government, he adopts team spirit in relating with his cabinet which majorly have Boko Haram Fans.
(3). GEJ means WELL for Nigerians, even till now! Forces against his government from within and without are numerous. We all owe him our prayers to deliver. Boko Haram or its likes has discovered that killing GEJ is the most easiest way to finally distabilised not only Southern person as president but as well destroy Nigeria. A killer is a tool in the hands of Satan to carry out his act of Klling, stealing, and destroying. Boko Haram has the spirit of the devil who means No GOOD FOR ANY ONE. The truth is Nobody can successfully end BH. Kill all her members / Fans, in the process of time the spirit goes into others willing to achieve the devils aim. Adam and Eve were recorded as the ones who obeyed the devil’s voice, thereby sinning against God. They are dead, yet sin is still been committed by so many in this world. The spirit behind BH is of Satan. You can only minimize the effect of their existence but not to totally eradicate them. Only God can. But this will happen when Satan, his followers, and his agents are finally thrown into the LAKE OF FIRE.
