Nigeria on Monday emerged best at the just-concluded third edition of the International Science Olympiad (ISO), winning five of the nine platinum medals in Abuja. The Olympiad was attended by 70 students from 18 countries.

The five Nigerians, who won the medals, were Sulieman Shehu, Isineyi Patrick, Iwuchuckwu Uchenna, Kelechi Ojimbao and Awe Oluwasanya.

“You are the future scientists who will better the world with your knowledge. We must let ISO continue and you must continue studying so as to broaden your horizon. As you get medals today, it will pave way for more medals. Who knows, you might end up getting a Nobel Prize,” Piraz said.
He told the participants to look beyond the competition and strive to make positive scientific contributions that would make the world peaceful and conducive for all.He also commended the participants for putting up good behavior and for the positive spirit of sportsmanship.
Mr Steve Oluwaniyi, the Head, International Olympiads, and National Mathematical Centre (NMC), said: “Nigeria hosted the ISO in collaboration with the NMC.”
He said the Olympiad would encourage students to be versatile in learning, especially in science subjects, to pave the way for country’s development.
Oluwaniyi said the competition exposed Nigerian students for peer comparison with students from other countries.
“ The success of Nigeria in this competition shows that our system of education is not dead or lower than the world’s standards.
