PHCN Meter - symbol of eduring darkness over Nigeria

The Commissioner in charge of Government and Consumer Affairs at the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) Dr. Ibrahim Abbah has said that Nigerians will no longer be required to pay for electricity metres with effect from on June 1, 2012.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) commissioner in charge of government and consumer affairs, Dr. Abba Ibrahim made this disclosure in Ilorin, Kwara State yesterday at a forum organised for electricity consumers, suppliers and regulators.

He said that Nigerian electricity consumers would no longer be required to pay for electricity metre when the new tariff order takes effect on June 1, 2012.
He pointed out that electricity metre, technically, belongs to PHCN, adding that PHCN would provide metre for everybody.

Ibrahim, who said the beauty of the new electricity tariff order was the segregation of consumers into several classes, adding that the commission had a target period of 18 months for every electricity consumer to be provided with metre.

He advised Nigerians to go for pre-paid metre, adding that they would not have to pay anything when there was no service.

The NERC boss said President Goodluck Jonathan had approved a subsidy of N50 billion to be applied specifically for consumers in low income cadre as well as commercial category including welders, hairdressers etc.

  5. However they should also remove metre maintenance fee which is worse. A consumer will pay a whooping amount over a period of time with or without service. BEWARE PHCN 419.

  10. This show the lack of ideas of our administrators they keep on pumping money into irrelevant places just to impoverish their citizen. How can you spend 50 billion on PHCN meters while there is no electricity. How do you re-coop your money when there is no electricity to roll the meters? You increase the tarrifs and the meters are not working, why will people pay? You want to upgrade the power sector with incompetent workers, how do you maintain? You want to deregulate the sector by spending more money? Why can't the buyer look for money, fix the sector by providing electricity first after which you now work out modalities on how they will re-coop back their money as they did in the telecoms industry. Why all this pampering in the power sector.Putting the cart before the horse has never worked and will never work if there is free money to always work with.Let the investors money work for them and not our money working for them. Govt think!!!

  11. 50billion to subsidize power for the lowly right? Our leaders are not actually short of ideals as we are tempted to think. They know what they are doing. Who told them that some cartegory of Nigerians need subsidized power? The 50billion is actually meant to prepare for 2015 election etc and not for any Nigerian.Even with the crash in GSM Tariff, are investors not struggling to acquire Licenses? Reasonable and sincere investors know that they will make it come what may. Govt is only trying to prepare groung for themselves to own, manage and exploit what alread belongs to us. 2015 shall tell!
