The Acting Inspector- General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, has advocated a N50, 000 minimum wage for a constable in the police force, saying such will go a long way to boost morale and promote efficiency.
The acting IG, who was on his first official visit to Lagos State on Monday, said he had already made proposal to the Federal Government and making a “serious representation” for the actualisation of the new salary structure for the police.
He said apart from salary, other welfare packages like housing, training, mortgage policy and efficient cooperative society were being restructured to make sure that every policeman benefitted.
He said, “We have started with the 500 housing unit in Abuja. The Rank and File will benefit from the housing policy first because they are the men on the field during the rain and the sun. I will pay attention to the Rank and File.”
Abubakar warned his men to henceforth stop any form of harassment of journalists and other Nigerians, saying if reports were made, culprits would face the law.
He, however, urged them to protect their stations and other public building. Abubakar said, “The era of attacking police station or government building is over. Anybody who attacks such is dead; you should not allow him to go. You must defend yourselves and you must defend government property.”
Earlier at Governor Babatunde Fashola’s office, Abubarkar said 50,000 policemen would soon go on course to boost response capacity to security challenges and crisis management.
According to him, 16,000 policemen out of the 50,000 will go for intelligence training, while 10,000 will go for detective training. He added that the newly promoted Assistant Commissioners of Police were undergoing a two week management course in Lagos.
Abubakar said following the dismantling of road blocks, the police had ordered for 300 patrol vehicles to be deployed in all the major roads in the country for effective policing and safety of the people on highways.
Governor Babatunde Fashola in his response, commended the leadership of the present police administration for its commitment to ensuring the security of lives and properties of residents.
He said: “Nothing will have meaning until we intensify law and order.
My position is that if more people comply with the law, more people will benefit.”

â„“̊ think this IG has something good to offer Nigerian but my fear is that he may end up disapointing us again. We had trusted our leaders in the past but later found out that they are corrupt themselves. Well if increasing police salary will prevent then from collecting bribe, he should go ahead ąЙd̶̲̥̅̊ push his proposal until it is approved.
