Protesting UNILAG students block Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos

University of Lagos students protesting the renaming of the forremost institution as Moshood Abiola University on Wednesday morning blocked the third Mainland Bridge in Lagos with BRT Buses in the 2nd day of protests.

The students marched from their main campus at Akoka, yaba through Herbert Macaulay Street to the Adekunle link on the bridge and used a Bus Rapid Transit bus to block the busy highway.

They are demanding the reversion to the original name of the university.

The protest jammed roads leading to the Third Mainland Bridge as well as the bridge itself.

The students had marched through some streets near the campus on Tuesday in protest at the renaming of the institution.

The university was renamed by President Goodluck Jonathan in his 50-minute his Democracy Day address to Nigerians on Tuesday.

His announcement of the name change did not go down well with the students, who felt Jonathan should have named another national monument after Abiola.

Although they said they had nothing against Abiola, who died on July 7, 1998 while fighting to validate his June 12, 1993 presidential mandate, they said UNILAG was not the most appropriate institution to be named after the late politician.

More details later.

  1. Unilag students always take things too far, i was in Unilag in 2000 during a protest, people were killed cars were vandalized and government vehicles were snatched and cannibalized and sold as parts. Ibidapo Obe made us stay at home for the next 6 months or so

  6. Good tactis to divert people attention from insecurity , poor road , no water , corruption and many Problems at hand.

I dont know weather rename of institution has anything to do about quality of the product.

I keep on asking myself weather this is an achievemnet for Mr Jonaa or something else.

We always miss chance of having Good leader.

I wonder about future of this country , youth that will be the leader of tomorrow are stealing , all in the name of protest.

Is stealing and many socila vices part of our blood ?

There is protest all over the world for one reason or the order but stealing will not be part of their agenda , only in Nigeria .

Why unilag student can not portray themselve well ?

I am yet to be convinced about future of this country.

Can Somebody tell me something about future of this country ?

  8. This act of misconduct in the name of protest is uncalled-for. Renaming of any institution has nothing to do with the standard of the institution or its image. MAU students should rather use this rear opportunity to demand from FG certain amenities that will improve condition of learning to suit their name, instead of waste their time seeking for something that cannot be changed. The institution belongs to FG, the President has the right to change the school name if need be. The students should be happy dat FG choose to name d school after M.K.O who had an impeccable records and integrity. It could have been name after some Amala Politicians in dat area. Up Jonathan!

  9. heyyyy presido jonaa, there are better things the common man out there expect you to do to leave a legacy of just your name. the issue of subsidy has not being fully actualised, a country that produces over 2m barrels of fuel daily can not beat there chest on selling price compared to there nieghbouring country.
presido jonaa, what legacy do you wish to leave after your name. increment of basic amenities, renameing some one elses glory or what.........
