The Inspector General of Police, IG, Mr. Mohammed Abu-bakar has said that 50,000 police men would undergo retraining as part of capacity building in the Force.
The IG, who spoke yesterday in Awka during an interactive session with a cross section of the people of Anambra State comprising traditional rulers, government officials, presidents -general of town unions and leaders of thought, explained that 20,000 of the number would begin the training immediately, adding that of the number, 16,000 would be trained on intelligence matters.
According to him, the training would also dwell on ethics, attitudinal change and mannerism, adding that the training became necessary because of the discovery that many policemen do not understand the code of conduct required of them.
He said: “Our vision is a police force that will guarantee security of lives and property of the people. We are aware of the antics of our policemen and that is why I am going around the country to hear from the people their feelings about the police to enable us decide on what to do.
“We know that criminals are not spirits and every traditional ruler knows his subjects, such that whenever a criminal resides in his domain, he should be able to identify him and report to the police.
“We are also determined to change the face of the police and that is why we have decided to ban the mounting of road blocks throughout the country.
As far as I am concerned, these road blocks have gone forever because we have noticed that corruption among the police had reduced by over 70 percent since we dismantled the road blocks.”
The IG also spoke on what he described as the special problem in the South East where police engage in weekend arrests so as to keep people in detention from Friday to Monday, adding that such treatment was inhuman.
Earlier during a courtesy call on Governor Peter Obi at the Governor’s Lodge, Abubakar said he took over as IG at a challenging period, but stressed that the problems were non insurmountable.
He told the governor that the police might not be able to achieve the desired result without proper equipment and commended the governor for the assistance he has been rendering to the police command in the state.
In his speech, Obi commended the IG for the efforts in combating crime in the country and promised to assist the police to curb crime in the state.
He said that his administration had provided the state command with over 200 operational vehicles and other communication gadgets, adding that the results were already showing. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
