The Nigerian candidate to head the World Bank said on Monday that the appointment was not being decided on merit and that the US nominee would win.
“You know this thing is not really being decided on merit,” Nigerian Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, also a former World Bank managing director, told reporters at a briefing on the country’s 2012 budget.
“It is voting with political weight and shares and therefore the United States will get it.”
The World Bank’s directors meet on Monday to decide who will be the powerful institution’s next chief, with all expectations that the United States will maintain its unbroken lock on the position.
Okonjo-Iweala said that despite the apparent failure of developing nations to have a nominee appointed to the post, her candidacy had helped inject change into the process.
The US nominee, Korean-American physician Jim Yong Kim, faced a challenge for the first time for 66 years from two strong developing country candidates.
The other candidate, former Colombian finance minister Jose Antonio Ocampo, dropped out on Friday complaining that the selection process was all political.
“It will never ever be the same again,” Okonjo-Iweala said.
“So we have won a big victory. Who gets to run the World Bank – we have shown we can contest this thing and Africa can produce people capable of running the entire architecture.”

ReplyDeleteD reason y we dont have 'political weight' is bcos our leaders have been raping this nation. Living large and luxurious lives, then going back to borrow money from the developed nations. Am not surprised.
ReplyDeleteI cherish Ngozi because it takes huge determination to fight developed nation in their political game.
ReplyDeleteThank God that Ngozi and Ocampo contested and many developing nations supported them. This is a signal to developed nations that we are awake and ready for competition.
Many here must grow up because Nigeria, with the combined force of those at home and abroad, is moving mountains and flying the flag of honour.
Let us support Nigeria for better days ahead.
Excellent job Ngozi. Keep it up. You have given hope to the hopeless because developed nations could not believe Nigeria could produce a challenger. Your attempt is their wake up call.
Madam you tried. Accept the fate and dont give excuses as we all know 9ja no de gree defeat. Unfortunately you cant go to court!
ReplyDeleteam impressed, the lord is ur straight ma
ReplyDeleteIn life we win some and let some go. Ma you're a woman of substance.
ReplyDeleteLife is just by chance, you get to learn this madam. This position you are occupying now in Nigeria you are not the best for it when it comes to merit.Your boss Mr. President is not the best person to rule this country. All this never came out of merit but mere favour. And point of correction you lost madam not we.This white do not work with untrusted policy like your boss that accept all policy from you.Welcome back our daughter we expect you next policy to sufer the general public.....
ReplyDelete...Her statement only goes further to show that she is not gracious and had no confidence to win in the first place. I strongly believe that people in public office can make impacts even in only one day, when efforts are made people see them. I used to be a big fan of the minister but since the start of her current term have lost confidence in her judgment
ReplyDeleteI also think that the people who are not happy with her critics should understand that we live in a "DEMOCRATIC" society (even though I think it is a bit totalitarian as people who demonstrated their displeasure at a policy were forced back home by armed presence) so we all have rights to our opinions in the long run I think we all expect the good of our great nation Nigeria, and whatever our views should work hard at making it better everyday.(even before trying to make the world better as it is said charity begins at home .... a man who has no food cant be expected to throw a party :).... So I'm glad she has the chance to stay home to prove herself) I Love you all I love Nigeria God bless us all!!
