WE ARE READY TO BREAK UP - Northern Leaders

Exactly 98 years after Colonial Governor-general, Lord Lugard amalgamated the North and South of Nigeria to create a new Nation-state, The Northern leaders have called their southern counterparts' bluff, insisting that the North will survive in the event of a break-up of Nigeria.

The call for a review of the national revenue formula by the Northern Governors' Forum and their Southern Governors' Forum counterparts' demand for fiscal federalism and resource control as well as calls for a national conference by many in the South have escalated tensions in the country.

But the northern leaders, under the auspices of the Arewa Elders Forum on Wednesday, said the North could stand on its own in a divided Nigeria.

Former adviser to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo on Food Security, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, said on the British Broadcasting Corporation Hausa Service monitored in Kaduna that the region would survive on agriculture if the country divides.

However, Abudullahi said the North would not push for the break-up, as he alleged that some Nigerians had been hiding under the agitation for the convening of a national conference show to the world that they were tired of staying in a united Nigeria.

The former Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, said, "We have resolved that we are not going to be the cause of Nigeria breaking up but if others decide that the country should be divided, and they insist that Nigeria should break up, we won't say no because we realise there is nothing we are getting in the current arrangement that other sections of the country are not getting.

"If they insist, why don't we sit down and talk? If at the end everybody agrees that Nigeria should be divided, if in the long run, everybody is satisfied that the country should break up, let it be."

The former presidential aspirant, who lamented insecurity in the country, and reiterated their resolve to work towards the continued existence of the nation.

  1. The problem of Nigeria is corruption in all session of government and private business, north or south or east or west. Unless every Nigerian change their attitude of corrupt behaviour in every way of life, dividing the nation will not help anybody.

How will dividing Nigeria help to stop state governors from looting their state money? Chief Ibori is an example in Delta, Joshua Dariye, Alamesegha, Lucky Igbinedion, etc are other examples.

How will dividing Nigeria release the strangle hold on electricity supply?

How will dividing Nigeria stop exam malpractices and collapse of educational processes and facilities?

Nigerians agitating for division of the country are themselves corrupt.

Fellow Nigerians, is it not time to check unguided utterances of some of us that have stolen enough of their people money/wealth in all parts of the country?
We hear/read every day that some so called leaders are calling for the country to break-up. Does it mean these selfish people have no other solutions to our problems in this country other than break-up? Are all inter-communal crises that claim lives of poor and innocent Nigerians inter-tribal? Jos crises and Ife Modakeke are good examples.
For the sake of God, whoever has nothing to offer should leave the country alone. Today, number of Mosques and Churches in Nigeria are more than Europe and Arab Worlds put together.
Nigerian needs very simple solutions such as good leadership devoid of selfishness and genuine war against corruption and security.

  6. Nigeria need the return of groundnut pyramid and other past laudable agriculture projects in the north, south and everywhere.

Oil and gas has turned Nigerian leaders into thieves in their government houses.

    Breakup is not the answer.

  7. what an irony, if the north can survive on agriculture, why the clamour for review of sharing formular, why wait until Nigeria is break up. shame onto you hypocrite.

  10. Nigerians should not be decieved by the hypocritical comments that this shameless losers who call themselves Northern elites are using. The North has been indirectly calling for the division of this nation by marginalising the south and at the birth of this Jonathan administration, some so called Northern elites speaking publicly and confidently that they will make the nation ungovernable for Jonathan and this heartless old cowards directly or indirectly has sponsored the death of many innocent Nigerians through their Boko Haram saga. Now this fools are now trying to decieve those wiser than them that they will not be the cause of the nations division. If the North knows they can survive, let them go and allow true peace to rain among the peaceful ones. The North must have it at the back of their mind that Nigeria is NOT for them alone.
    GOD BLESS NIGERIA

  11. We should realize that one of the majour factors that makes Nigeria to be recognized in global political Arena is our population and size apart from Oil production. Therefore, to breakup, don't be surprised that many of the divided parts of the country would have their names disappeared in the world map.

As soon as the country is divided, belief me there will be more crisis in Niger Delta; because Ijaw would like to be on their own, Ikwere wants to be on their own, Ogoni wants to be on its own etc. in Delta state, Isoko would not like hearing from Urobo, Ishekiri will never agreed with Ijaw. Akwaibom has its own and others. Breaking up is never a problem but to think twice about it.

Flushing out PDP will really do us good. The thieves have to be chased away otherwise we will never realize where the problems come from. We have 1,001 Ibori in the PDP.

  12. THE NIGERIAN PROJECT IS NOT GOD MADE BUT MAN MADE FOR EASE OF ADMINISTRATIONS.HAVING SERVED THAT PURPOSE,THE FORCEFUL MARRIAGE BTW THE NORTH AND THE SOUTH SHOULD BE EVALUATED IN THE LIGHT OF CURRENT HAPPENINGS IN THE SO CALLED NIGERIAN STATE.A GOOD AND A PEACE MARRIAGE IS ONE BASED ON TRUST AND MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING BTW THE MARRING PARTIES BUT THE REVERSE IS THE CASE IN PRESENT DAY NIGERIA. IF WE ARE SINCERE, WE SHOULD NOT BE AFRIAD TO RESORT TO A NATIONAL CONFERENCE TO ENABLE THE CONSTUTIENT PARTS OF THE NIGERIAN STATE TO COME AND DISCUSS THE TERMS FOR OUR CO-EXISTENCE.NATIONAL CONFERENCE WILL ENABLE US TO DISCUSS AREAS OF SUSPICIONS AMONGST US AND PROFER A LASTING SOLUTION TO ALL THESE PROBLEMS.

  13. You are all under the influence of early-morning palmy. Stop disturbing your peace. All Nigerians are living on their own without any responsive govt. Let individuals continue to live on their own until a truce is reached on way forward. Period!

  14. The northerners are saying their mind, am sure before this statement was out Arewa must have held a meeting and concluded within themselves that breaking up is their way out. It's better to let them go on their own since they believe dt they are not benefiting anything fr d govt. At least they succeeded in making Nigeria ungovernable for GEJ cos they don't want him. Let them go away with their Boko haram b4 they still add another problem to this gr8 country. Am sure they will name it REPUBLIC OF BOKOHARAM...lol. One after d other God will continue to arrest all d bad leader of this nation, it's started already. God bless Nigeria

  16. It is about time. For there is absolutely nothing that binds the north together with the south. They are clearly different in all respects and should be allowed to develope at their respective paces. Split this unwieldy monstrosity put together by a drunken Lugard assisted by a carefree par amore .

  21. Cutting of head is not the best treatment for an headache. Whether we break up or remain one "indivisible" entity, dialogue will be employed at one time or the other to settle whatever differences that is confronting us today. Then, why are some of our leaders afraid of Sovereign National Conference that was postulated by intelligent individuals that constituted NADECO? I am convinced that SNG will come up one day no matter how monstrous/demonic they want us to believe it is.

  33. European govt has made a mistake in 1914 by joining oil and water (North and south) together, thinking that they would mix-up (become one country). Now that it is clear, let's correct it! let's seperate oil from water(North from the South)for peace to rain.

  34. Why will this kind of person be allowed to head educational institution and what moral culture have they been incalcuating on the young innocent nigerians. I strongly belief that they gradually will come out of there hidding to show the entire world the demon in them.
