South Africa hosts Mr Gay World contest (First time on African soil)

Andreas Derlrth, 32, of New Zealand, was crowned Mr Gay World 2012

Mr Gay World started in Canada in 2009, and this year, South Africa stepped up to host the competition. This year Andreas Derleth, a 32-year-old German living in New Zealand, took the crown, with South Africa's Lance Weyer first runner-up.

Homosexuality is illegal in 37 African countries, with the death penalty applicable in Mauritania, northern Nigeria, Somalia and Sudan. Nigeria did not participate in this year's probably because of fears that the legislature frowns at it. In my opinion, i think bringing the competition to Africa will encourage Nigerian Gay's to come out and participate in future gay pageants.

Wendelinus Hamutenya, a 25-year-old nurse and midwife from Namibia (pictured on the left) and an Ethiopian graduate student named Robel Hailu, (pictured on the right) whose family disowned him after they found out he was planning to participate in the gay pageant .

Wendelinus Hamutenya came out as gay when he was 16. His father called the police and sent him to hospital for psychiatric treatment.

Now 25, Hamutenya was proud to represent his country, Namibia, at the Mr Gay World competition night – the first time the event has been staged in Africa.

they where the only 3 African countries that participated in this year's "beauty pageant"

According to Guardian UK, South Africa is the only country on the continent to legalise gay marriage.

Winner, Mr Gay World 2012 Andreas Derleth

  6. A day s coming when you Nigerians will repent of your hypocrisy, if you are secured in your sexuality then you don’t have any reason to fear homosexuals. In a world where we have seen Gay Bishops, ignorant people are posting rubbish here and claming Jesus and God to back their hate and homophobia. The earth is the Lord and its fullness, read your religious books and stop interpreting it to mean that God is hate, No God is love and Inclusive.

  9. Homosexuality, lesbianism, bisexuality; whatever name its called, is wrong!
also against nature (check the animals when mating).
But its unfortunate and sad that its just a matter of time till we "GET USED TO THEM" and maybe "LET THEM BE!".
But that sure wont change the Maker's judgement when we close our eyes in death!
(70 or 90yrs of perverse fun ON THIS PLANET IS NOTHING COMPARED TO ABOVE 100MILLION YEARS IN ETERNITY!)

  11. Only a fool will copy animals in doing anything.

God made homosexuals as surely as he made you and he loves homosexual's as surely as he loves you.

The Bible and the Quoran both condemn homosexuality. Therefore it is sinful.

But I swear to you, hear in Lagos, where I live, there are more sinners than there are the faithful

  12. Oh shut up. Religion is a disease that plagues mankind more that homosexuality. I'm not gay and i don't condone the acne, but religion is way worse than it. All you guys do is spread your hate for anyone that is against what is written is an ancient book. The bible is a fable, nothing more. And Islam is crap too. Use your common sense and quit judging people.

  16. Those that believe the bible is a myth, should rethink about their words, the book may be acient, but it reflects ur everyday live on earth, whatever is condemed in that book is quite bad, so don't open ur mouth and say something that will bring course on.
