Sokoto residents sleep outside due to intense heat

Some residents of Sokoto metropolis have resorted to sleeping outside due to the intensive heat being experienced in the area.

A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Sokoto reports that the hot weather forced the temperature to rise up to 40 degrees Celsius.

Malam Aminu Mohammad told NAN on Wednesday that the “unfriendly weather” had forced him and his entire family to sleep outside their apartment for the past three days.

According to him, the situation has become unbearable due to power outage and his inability to purchase a generator to ease life for the family.
Mr. Chuks James of Offa Road, however, said that the high cost of fuel had made it impossible for owners of generators to utilise them.

James described the heat as a “dangerous phenomenon ” to public health, adding that it was also capable of forcing snakes out of their abode, thereby posing danger to the health and safety of the people.

He said that in the face of his seeming helplessness, “there is nothing we can do; we leave everything in the hands of God.”

Also commenting, Malam Kabiru Isa of Emir Yahaya area, appealed to President GoodLuck Jonathan to evolve more measures to ensure speedy positive results in the ongoing power sector reform.
Another resident, Alhaji Musa Isa, also ur
ged the Federal Government to, as a matter of urgency, work out modalities for the smooth implementation of the ongoing reforms in the sector.
