Power supply will improve next year - Alison-Madueke

The Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, has pledged to fast track the provision of gas for the National Integrated Power Project to boost power supply in the country.

The minister made the pledge in Abuja on Monday while briefing journalist on the project.
She said the measure was part of the ministry’s 12 month gas emergency plan aimed at boosting power generation and ensuring stability in power supply.

"In the next 12 months, we will be adding 500mmcf/d (equivalent to 2000MW) to the national grid. This will have a direct major impact on the overall power situation in the country."

She said that by the time the gas plants at Escravos, Utorogu, Ughelli , Oredo as well as the laying of Olorunshogo pipeline were completed in June, 180mmcf/d (about 700MW) of the 500mmcf/d would have been generated.

Alison-Madueke expressed the Federal Government’s commitment to meeting the gas short fall to enhance power supply.

She gave the assurance that there would be significant improvement in the epileptic power supply in the next one year when most of the projects would have been completed.
The minister added that the ministry was already sourcing for funds through government’s public/ private funding initiatives since the projects would require additional funding.
Alison-Madueke advised the Gas Aggregation Company Nigeria Limited to ensure proper monitoring of the projects, and to give regular updates to a steering committee jointly chaired by the ministers of Power and Petroleum Resources.

She said the power sector had taken steps to address the outstanding debts and commitment to paying for future gas supply as well as other terms stipulated in the gas supply agreements.

``I am confident that the steps we are taking will have a visible impact on gas sustainability and supply, and therefore will positively impact the power aspiration of the nation.’’
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the minister had earlier met with the Minister of Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji, on how to ensure smooth implementation of the projects and ensure stable power supply in the country.

Alison-Madueke announced a 12 month `gas supply emergency plan’ last week with the aim of ensuring adequate power supply in the country.
