The days when people look down on Nigerian policemen and refer to them as uneducated will soon be gone with the wind as the Nigeria Police Academy in Wudil, Kano State, has been upgraded to a degree awarding institution, and policemen seeking admission are now to write JAMB/UTME.
This followed an approval given to the institution by the National Universities Commission on Tuesday.
Although the institution is meant to serve as a training ground for police cadets, its degree awarding status brings the total number of Nigerian universities to 124.
Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof. Julius Okojie, who conveyed NUC’s approval to the institution, urged the police authorities to ensure that standards were maintained.
He stressed the need for adequate courses to be run due to its specialised capacity.
Okojie said courses offered by the institution must be for capacity building.
He said for maximum standard to be maintained, policemen seeking admission to the academy should be made to sit for UTME examinations since the academy is now a degree awarding institution.
He said, “This will ensure that proficiency is nurtured to help management structure.”
Minister of Police Affairs, Navy Capt Caleb Olubolade (retd.), said, “The police force now requires an institution that is service oriented especially now that our state of insecurity calls for dedicated training and capacity building.”
Also speaking at the event, Executive Secretary of Tertiary Trust Fund, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said so much was expected from the academy, especially as it would be following in the footsteps of Nigeria Defence Academy.
He said, “Training in the academy is not only for officers who have since passed degree level but for up coming officers who need to grow to degree level.”

I think NUC is wrong this time. Very soon Nigeria and the world at large will hear of the approval for Nigerian Custom University, Nigerian immigration Service University, Nigerian Prison Service University, Nigeria Civil defense Corps University and so on>>>>> Besides, what gives people the impression that Police Officers are not schooled. I have heard of lawyers, Doctors and other professional in the Police. The the training remain as it were so that graduates from existing Nigerian institutions interested in Policing join the Officers cadre based on qualification. In my opinion some of our approaches are capable of creating divisive educational tendencies, rather than constructive. What we should be seen doing now is redeeming falen education standards not creating more problems. Also that the Nigerian Armed Forces runs a degree awarding institution does not make the creation of other paramilitary institution expedient.
ReplyDeleteTry to maintain the 'status quo' pls. Let the graduates from the existing universities be incorporated into the police force, after which the officers could be given police training in their formation. It is not how many universities in Nigeria but how efficient and effective our institutions are. The idea is a white elephant one.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with both comments above...(thumbs up solomon and anonymous!)
