Nigerian military not yet world class —Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan is displeased with the quality and professionalism of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
He believes the nation’s military lack the quality of the best in the world.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday in Kaduna said that the welfare, equipment professionalism of the nation’s armed forces were not comparable to best international practice, declaring that the Nigerian Armed Forces were lagging behind among the comity of nations.

The President in his address as the Reviewing Officer at the passing-out parade and commissioning of the Direct Short Service Course 20 (Navy) at the the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna noted that it was based on the fact that the nation’s Armed Forces were not of international standard that his administration was working towards transforming the Armed Forces to meet the world best standard.

Jonathan, who was represented by the Vice-President, Namadi Sambo , enjoined the cadets to shun any act capable of jeopardising the peace and unity of the country.

The president said, “Let me at this juncture reiterate the high premium this administration places on the welfare of the members of the Armed Forces. As Commander-in-Chief, I have repeatedly assured members of the Armed Forces of my desire to transform the Armed Forces into a modern military institution that the nation can be proud of.

“The transformation will make it comparable to other Armed Forces in advanced world in terms of welfare, equipment, training and professionalism.
“The recent acquisition of NNS Tunder and approval for additional platforms are part of implementation process and practical demonstration of the commitment of this administration to restructuring of the Nigerian Navy,” he said.

The president urged the soldiers to utilise the friendship they had at the Academy to discourage acts of tribalism, promotion of religious or political differences to cause disharmony in our collective unity and peace.

A total of 85 cadets, including female cadets passed out from the nine months direct short service military course with three of them receiving Navy Gold Medal, Navy Silver Medal and Commandant’s awards respectively.

  1. Why can't you try to address the issue of corruption in the Armed forces. The little resources they are getting, how are they using it or is it judiciously spent? Th q-grant, maintenance allowance, RCA and others. Please extend your probe to those areas in order to sanitize armed forces.

  7. That second guy name should be dunce. It is your work to go to Liberia, sierraleone or any other warlike areas. do you expect a bloody civilian like me to fight in Kano, maiduguri and others? it is what you signed for and you must to do the job and that is why u are 4kingly eating my hard-earn tax payment as your 4king salary, bros you must do the job; you get no choice or we charge you for cowardice behavior after all your one time chief argued that you guys are unproductive . I guess you are a commissioned officer otherwise you wouldn't have said so. the Non commissioned carder of the Armed forces are not comfortable because you don't allow them getting their entitlements and that is why your barracks look like graveyard; very dilapidated because resources allocated for its maintenance are not judiciously spent. check some of your officers on fleet of cars, where do they get the money? those cars are the welfare of other soldiers. what is the meaning of wait for your turn in the Forces? means when you grow in the service then you start stealing your own. Shame on you. YEMI.

  9. I believe the second commentator is of the lower cadre in the military and was trying to complain of poor welfare of troops and lack of compensation to families of lost combatants probably because of corruption and misuse of the large budget by the senior officers. Thing is he voiced it out the wrong way......totally wrong! Problem of semi-literacy.
