Nigeria seeks foreign help to tackle Boko Haram

The Federal Government of Nigeria says it is collaborating with the international community in a bid to overcome the security challenges facing the country.

Vice-President Namadi Sambo said this at a forum organised by the Nigerian Embassy in Washington DC, United States on Tuesday for foreign investors and stakeholders in the agriculture sector.

A statement by his Senior Special Assistant, Media and Publicity, Umar Sanni, quoted Sambo as assuring the investors that government was addressing the security challenges, particularly the Boko Haram insurgence in the North, through various efforts.

He said apart from the collaboration with the international community, the Federal Government was also strengthening the capacity of the security agencies in dealing with the new challenge.

The VP said the government had resolved to use agriculture as one of the major drivers of its transformation agenda.

He said the government was concentrating on agriculture because of its contribution to food security, poverty alleviation and employment generation.
He said, "Much efforts are being geared towards large scale production of such staples as rice, cassava, sorghum, including opportunities in livestock, fisheries, maize, soya beans, palm oil, cocoa and cotton."

The VP called on American investors as well as Nigerians in the Diaspora to take advantage of the abundant opportunities for investment in the country's agribusiness, adding that government had undertaken a number of reforms to make Nigeria investor-friendly.

While appreciating the exploratory visit of a group of American investors in the power sector which included major stakeholders in the industry, particularly General Electric of the United States, he said much attention was being committed to addressing challenges of the transport sector by constructing roads and rehabilitating the abandoned 4000KM railway and constructing new lines.

He added that the administration is building new thermal pants for the power sector and has created new inland waterways by  dredging River Niger, noting that the consultancy service for River Benue has just been awarded.
Earlier, the Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Adewumi Adesina, said the country was focussing on agriculture not just as a development agent but as business.
He said government has committed N2.7 billion to the sector and international organisations are in full support of agriculture programme in Nigeria.

Adesina said Nigeria seeks strong partnership with the US in agric sector as the sector remains the life of the country, adding that women and youth were the target of the revolution.
